A Murdered Child and a Divided Nation: Candle of Civilization Flickers as Bigotry and Jingoism Run Amuck

We live in shameful times when the world's oldest surviving republic, America, and the world's largest republic, India, make it fashionable to support Neo-Nazis and rapists fueled by tribal instincts of hyper-partisanship, naked bigotry and even jingoism, that insidious sibling of patriotism. How else does one comprehend the fact that faced with a brutal rape and murder of a child a nation is divided into those clamoring for justice and those actually more interested in conspiracy theories and some more interested in establishing, on very questionable statistics, that India is a land of safety. Alas, in Trump's America and Modi's India all of the above are possible.

Asifa Banu, 8 year old girl from the nomadic Bakarwal community, a Muslim tribe, went absconding on January 10th in Kathua, a town near Jammu. Asifa, kept captive for 6 days was dumped on January 15th and found on January 17th. Subsequent investigations reportedly showed that the child was gruesomely drugged, raped, maimed and killed. A four month investigation identified 8 Hindus including a custodian of a local temple where she was allegedly kept captive and the heinous crime committed. Jammu is a Hindu majority twin of the Muslim majority Kashmir in the state of Jammu-Kashmir that India tenaciously holds on to with the brute force of the world's fourth largest army. The accused were Hindus and the murdered was a Muslim and in a state torn asunder with communal strife that was enough to light a keg. Hindu Lawyers, yes lawyers, joined with others and organized protests to prevent the lodging of a charge sheet against the accused.

A personal anecdote here. I went to Disney World at Orlando when my child was 5 years old. One day at the park as my wife and I were looking at a map in a minute our daughter slipped away from us. We found her within 5 minutes. Within those 5 minutes we lived a life time. Our thoughts raced from alerting park police, checking cell phones for latest pictures of her, figuring a strategy etc. When we found her we hugged her like there was no tomorrow. We're in Disney World where the chances of her really getting lost is almost nil. We're in America, she knew our address, contact phones, we had cell phones, so on and so on. Yet for those few minutes we were on edge. Asifa's parents are possibly dirt poor, else why should a girl who should be at school be out grazing and they live in a state that has not known peace for over 20 years. Words cannot capture the grief of a parent to find their child like that.

The murder of 17 year old Navarasu, a medical college student, by John David shook Tamil Nadu and led to the promulgation of stringent laws against ragging which was said to have been the root cause of that grisly murder. John David murdered and dismembered Navarasu's body and dispatched them. Though John David was acquitted in the High Court, overturning a lower court sentence of double murder, the Supreme Court reinstated the verdict after 11 years and John David surrendered. I cannot remember Tamil Nadu getting cleaved along religious lines then.

In the heels of Asifa's murder I find despicable posts about children or others being murdered in a mosque or by a christian priest etc. What the posts always fail to mention is the lack of support from anyone for those let alone support from lawyers and suspicions of orchestrated support amongst even the police. That the legal establishment would brazenly rally in support of the accused is what raised the ire of the country more.

That the venue of the crime was a temple and that the perpetrators were probably intending to terrorize the nomadic Muslim tribe have provided some patented idiots with the excuse to lampoon Hinduism and that in turn has provided the perfect cover for fundamentalist amongst Hindus, who are in no short supply these days, to trot out despicable posts about Islam.

A staunch fundamentalist Madhva, as he calls himself after some arcane sect of which I know little, posted on Facebook a questionable quote from Koran alleging that the prophet Muhammad married a 6 year old and that Koran supports such marriages. Muhammad lived in the 6th-7th century CE at which time such marriages were par for the course in India too. If one attended meetings conducted by atheist Davidar Kazhagam one could learn of contentious history of Hinduism, of course narrated without a nod to any nuance or context. This Madhva then had the cheek to argue how Hindu Srutis and Smritis do not offer any scriptural support for child marriage. This is shibboleth. The support offered to child marriage in 19th century by India's venerated freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak shreds the arguments of that Madhva fundamentalist. Here's a selection from an earlier blog of mine.

Historian Stanley Wolpert charts the ebb and flow of Tilak's ideas on India being a "Hindu state" and of various people in various states cannot "have one nationality". When a colonial official wanted to open a school for girls Tilak railed against it and waxed eloquent on the duties of girls as per Hindu Dharma. Commenting on the case of Rakhamabai, an educated woman who refused to go to her much older husband after her father's death, Tilak wrote "if a woman does not go to her husband she should be punished by the king, and if she disobeys the king's order she should be imprisoned" and then helpfully compared her to a eunuch from India's epic story Mahabharata, Shikandi.

Faced with opposition from reactionary Hindus to raising the 'age of consent' for marriage and sex from 10 to 12 (yes that was the age) the Colonial government balked until a 11 year Phulmani Bhai died of lacerations during intercourse in 1890. Tilak, Wolpert notes, did not see "any need of reforming the law at present". Arguing on behalf of Phulmani's husband Tilak wrote:
"Hari Mohun could not be responsible for intercourse with his wife, 11 years old - an intercourse which neither he nor almost the whole of India, nor even her legislators, had reason to think to be dangerous to life".
Unlike Wolpert the Indian biographers praise Tilak for "his accurate knowledge of Hindu scriptures and his legal acumen...He took up cudgels on behalf of tradition and attacked all those who wanted to defy it. His retorts were crushing, his language biting and his tone was offensive throughout the controversy". Some cudgels, some acumen indeed.

Several of India's founding fathers, as I wrote in an earlier blog, had taken child brides. Rabindranath Tagore married Mrinalini Devi in 1883 when he was 22 and she was 10. Tagore not only had a child-wife but gave one of his daughters in a similar marriage. Bharathiar too had a child-wife. Tilak, we learn, was married when he was 16. I'm sure his wife was not 17, to say the least. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan married Sivakamu in 1903, he was 16 and she was 10.

Rajaji was married to one Alarmelu Managammal, known as Manga in 1897 (note, the biographer does not give the year I got it from wikipedia). Manga, Rajmohan writes, was a 'child-wife'. Manga was 10 years old, Rajaji was 18-19 years old. As was the custom Manga lived with her parents till she attained puberty. Meanwhile Rajaji passes his law exam in 1900. Then, aged 12 and apparently having reached puberty Manga comes to Rajaji. Manga, gave birth to their first child a "day after her 13th birthday".

20th century liberalism learned from Colonial rulers made these stalwarts recoil in horror at what their lives were and against much opposition from fellow Hindus outlawed child marriage. Only a bigoted fundamentalist would dredge questionable episodes of a religious leader's life in the 7th century while the country is mourning the mind numbing murder of a child. Apparently the Muhammad episode is very questionable.

A simple google search led me to this column by Shaista Gohir in The Guardiam.

So why is the practice of child marriage sanctioned in Muslim countries? Unfortunately, ultra-conservative religious authorities justify this old tribal custom by citing the prophet Muhammad's marriage to Aisha. They allege Aisha was nine years old when the prophet married her. But they focus conveniently on selected Islamic texts to support their opinions, while ignoring vast number of other texts and historical information, which suggests Aisha was much older, putting her age of marriage at 19. Child marriage is against Islam as the Qur'an is clear that intellectual maturity is the basis for deciding age of marriage, and not puberty, as suggested by these clerics (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/apr/25/middle-east-child-abuse-pederasty)
This Madhva fundamentalist cheekily asked me if I, whom he considers a Christian, had condemned unequivocally the child abuse scandal of Catholic Church in US. Unfortunately for him I had written a note on Facebook just weeks earlier after having watched the Oscar Awarded movie, 'Spotlight'. Let me reiterate, I'd have preferred that the Boston diocese, the priests who were accused, the Boston Cardinal were all prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and jailed. I wish the punitive damages were of such nature that the Church would've been compelled to root out the evil that was allowed lurk within its conscience. As for Pope John Paul II I prefer that he not be sainted, a ludicrous practice by itself, on account of how he handled the scandal. Of course, unlike me, the fundamentalist could not find it in himself to be unequivocal in this heinous crime. He had to wait to find an excuse to indulge in mudslinging to his hearts content.

If one started citing religious texts then one can play football with any religion. When it comes to India this fundamentalist and others blather about Sruti and Smruti etc turning a blind eye to reality. Sruti or Smruti who cares, here's reality. Per the Census of Indian state even in 2001 the incidence of child marriage was 14.4%. The percentage then rapidly decline to 3.7% in 2011. Remember that's still in the thousands since it is 3.7% of nearly a billion people. Incidentally my maternal grandmother was a child bride in 1930s. She became a widow with 5 children, the youngest aged 6 months, when she was barely in her teens. This is reality and it'd be straining credulity to say that this happened over hundreds of years into the recent past without any scriptural support. Sure, India can feel proud about the reforms.

Incidentally, there are mosques, yes mosques, for LGBT in Paris, Berlin, Australia and Chicago. Two days ago I listened to a broadcast on NPR about the mosque in Chicago and need to write about it separately. I don't know of any temple that openly accepts LGBT. Protestant denominations have opened their churches and even clergy to LGBT. The Madhva fundamentalist and others exaggerate the liberalism of Hinduism while grossly underplaying the varieties and progressiveness of Abrahamic religions. The truth, as always, is in the middle. There's more theological variety and liberalism in Abrahamic religions than the Hindutva brigade and frankly even many Hindus realize. There's more unitary structure and orthodoxy in Hinduism than the Hindutva brigade would like to admit or Hindus would like to acknowledge.

Given that my citizenship is an open secret I'm often faced with "oh is it great in America", "why don't you write about faults in America". I'll briefly answer both.

The movie 'Spotlight' deserves a blog by itself. So why would I postpone that or not write it with as much eagerness or immediacy as I write about Asifa? Simple reasons. In America I did not see Catholics rushing to defend the Cardinal or priests. In America a major newspaper published investigative articles and eventually that got made into a movie. The movie was celebrated at the world's most watched awards show. As I always says, there's no paradise on earth. Every nation and society has dark chapters but those nations that unflinchingly face up to their warts have a redemptive quality. I'm yet to see India measure  up the standards of the West on that. It is easier to get a Western Christian to accept that the Church had a bloody past than to get an Indian accept that the past in India had very dark chapters.

Columnist and writer P.A.Krishnan surprised me on a different count. While he would like to see justice done and he wages a daily battle against the worshippers of Modi his patriotism sometimes makes him take a jingoistic hue. I cannot fathom the reason as to why he chose this moment of grief to argue that India has far less cases of rape than United States.

I looked up reports of rapes being underreported in India and I chose only reports from Indian newspapers lest I be accused of being a biased westerner. A report in Hindu says "husbands commit a majority of acts of sexual violence" and "only one per cent of marital rapes and six per cent of rapes by men other than husbands are reported to police". Anyone who has remotely lived in India will readily attest to not only that but will also add that thousands of blatant harassment and sexual violence, for example in mass transit and other places, are literally not reported. I know wives of friends and relatives who have commuted for 15 years to New York City or Washington DC without a single finger touching them and yet many of them have experienced horrifying assaults in Chennai buses. In the recent agitations for Cauvery water blatant sexual harassment of girls was recorded and shared on social media but not a single case, as far as I know, was registered for that. In another recent notorious case in Uttar Pradesh a BJP party MLA was arrested for rape only after months of the rape victim's relatives trying to register a case.

Whether it is US or India reporting rape and prosecuting the perpetrators is a harrowing experience for the victim. The US certainly has made strides in that and India is yet to catch up. The smug question of "where's statistics" is completely a partisan question when it comes to iNdia, a nation that has a very, very long history of not maintaining history. Data and record keeping are pathetic in India, for many reasons, compared to the West. This is often used to sweep inconvenient truths under the carpet.

The movie Lion, based on a child who gets lost and comes back as adult in search of his parents, underscored the issue of missing children in India. Nearly 80,000 kids go missing in India every year says an article that also mentions that nearly 400,000 children go missing in US. The reason for the lopsided difference becomes understandable if one check the hyperlink to the data. In US the FBI maintains a data of a missing child and every time a child is reported missing it is counted, that includes children who often run away too. The missing kids website also informs that that number might still be underreported in US.

In these days of social media lies travel around the globe in the time taken by truth to just put on its shoes. The fundamentalists are spreading a vile post by a known purveyor of lies, Shanknaad, that supposedly pokes holes in the police case against the accused. The Quint has done a decent job of debunking the lies at https://www.thequint.com/news/webqoof/what-really-happened-kathua-rape-case

I cannot for the life of me understand the Indian impulse to haughtily pretend that, against all evidence to the contrary, that things are not too worse compared to developed and advanced economies and may even be better.

My plea to Indians is simple, "Let America be an uncivilized hell hole. That's ok. Just look at the numbers for India, even the underreported ones, it is still an unconscionable one".

Yes many American states do not have a proper age limit for marriage but actual incidences of child marriages are next to nothing in US. A PEW research report says five out of every 1000 15-17 olds in US are married. That's it. Now compare with the 3.7% (remember it is per cent not per thousand) of India's one billion are child marriages in 2011. A Times of India report puts the number of girls marrying before 18, the legal limit, at 7%. This is a problem. Accept it.

America is undergoing a pivotal moment after New York Times broke the story of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's sexual harassments. The #Metoo movement spawned by that has felled many powerful men across entertainment industry and even corporations. Where is India's #Metoo movement? A court recently ruled in India that a feeble "no" by a woman is actually consent for sex.

P.A. Krishnan angrily asked me, because of course I'm an American citizen, does not America have the world's largest prison population and are not most of them African-Americans? Guess what, today the Pulitzers were announced and in the general non-fiction category the prize went to a book titled, "Locking up our own: Crime and Punishment in Black America" by James Forman Jr. The last presidential election saw a vigorous debate on that topic. Show me when was the last time India's pathetic juvenile convicts condition was spoken of on a public platform of that nature?

India, as V.S. Naipaul, in a mellowed third part of what started as a bitter trilogy, put it, is a "million mutinies". While all my complaints and anger above are warranted it'd be unfair not to credit the part of the country, including thousands of Hindus, who would like to see harsh justice meted out to the barbarians who defiled a child. "Hope", as Alexander Pope wrote, "springs eternal in the human breast".

அம்பேத்கர் அழகாகச் சொன்னார், "A progressive order of reverance and a graded order of contempt" என்று.

"Varna means pre-determination of the choice of man's profession. The law of varna is that a man shall follow the profession of his ancestors for earning his livelihood. Varna therefore is in a way the law of heredity. Varna is not a thing that is superimposed on Hindus, but men who were trustees for their welfare discovered the law for them. It is not a human invention, but an immutable law of nature—the statement of tendency that is ever present and at work like Newton's law of gravitation. Just as the law of gravitation existed even before it was discovered so did the law of varna. It was given to the Hindus to discover that law. By their discovery and application of certain laws of nature, the people of the West have easily increased their material possessions. Similarly, Hindus by their discovery of this irresistible social tendency have been able to achieve in the spiritual field what no other nation in the world has achieved.Varna has nothing to do with caste.

Down with the monster of caste that masquerades in the guise of varna. It is this travesty of varna that has degraded Hinduism and India. Our failure to follow the law of varna is largely responsible both for our economic and spiritual ruin. It is one cause of unemployment and impoverishment, and it is responsible for untouchability and defections from our faith.

The Rishis after incessant experiment and research arrived at this fourfold division, that of teaching, of defending, of wealth-producing, and of manual service.

In ancient times there were automatic trade guilds, and it was an unwritten law to support all the members of the profession. A hundred years ago, a carpenter's son never wanted to become a lawyer. Today he does, because he finds the profession the easiest way to steal money. "

செட்டியார்களைப் பற்றி அற்புதமான புத்தகம், "Caste and Capitalism in Colonial India: The Nattukottai Chettiars" by David West Rudner.

Andal, Vairamuthu and a People Gone Berserk

The Brahmin community that has been running amuck for 10 days and the Hindutva brigade that's been baying for his blood all owe an apology to Vairamuthu or at least, if any decency is left, drop this topic and get on with their lives.

Vairamuthu's ONLY sin was sourcing a quote and like the many who are pillorying him, being a non-academician and accepting what's printed as God's own truth without probing further. If this is sin worth lynching him then what do we with the authors of Hindutva rag sheets or the many wanderers in the portals of academia that have become cesspools of revisionism servicing linguistic chauvinism or nationalist jingoism?

Vairamuthu (Image Courtesy sbllPOijgdhcg.jpg)
I've finally managed to get hold of the book, "Indian Movements: Some Aspects of Dissent Protest and Reform" edited by S.C. Malik. The book is published by "Indian Institute of Advanced Study - Simla", not by Indiana University. The copy Vairamuthu used was issued by Indiana University. The poor dilettante just mistook it for being a university publication.

The essay, in that book, "Bhakti Movement in South India" is by M.G.S. Narayanan and Veluthat Kesavan, both professors from Calicut University. Before we get to the offending lines let’s understand who these authors were.

Wikipedia has good details on Muttayil Govindamenon Sankara Narayanan aka M.G.S. Narayanan. He is a very highly regarded historian. Unlike Vairamuthu and his detractors I’ve taken pains to go to some of the sources of the quotations just to verify the context and reassure myself that no misrepresentation creeps.

Wikipedia supplies a quote from A.L. Bhasham to affirm the merits of Narayanan as a historian. Bhasham, referring to an index of inscriptions in Narayanan’s book “Perumals of Kerala” had said that the index alone is “a contribution to knowledge more valuable than many PhD theses”. This was excerpted from a review of a recent edition of the book, published in Frontline, and reviewer was none other than Veluthat Kesavan.

The mob spawned many conspiracy theories on the motivations of Vairamuthu to foreign universities meddling in India at the behest of a world conspiracy to undermine Hinduism were mentioned.

M.G.S. Narayanan was, interestingly, appointed Chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research in 2001 during Vajpayee’s tenure and was assured by Murli Manohar Joshi, then education minister, that there would be no interference in academic matters. Of course the honeymoon lasted just 2 years and Narayanan was ousted. Narayanan, Ramachandra Guha characterizes, in a column, as one who “knows his Vallathol and his Basheer, but also his Foucault and his Sartre”. Guha adds that unlike Paul Zachariah who calls himself a ‘man of the left’ Narayanan could best be described as ‘a man of the “anti-left”’.

Narayanan’s book “Perumals of Kerala” is subtitled “Brahmin Oligarchy and Ritual Monarchy: Political and Social Conditions of Kerala Under the Cera Perumals of Makotai (c. A.D 800-A.D 1124)”. Kesavan Veluthat takes issue with the anti-Brahmin flavor of that title in his review and points out that the book in fact shows Brahmins of that era in a very favorable light. Combining Kesavan’s observation and Guha’s characterization one can say that Narayanan cannot be boxed into the knee jerk neo-nazi anti-Brahmin lumpen crowd led by Karunanidhi. To be fair to Vairamuthu one cannot say he believed in everything Karunanidhi espoused or came to symbolize. I’ve not come across any overt anti-Hindu or anti-Brahminical flavored uttering of Vairamuthu.

About Kesavan Veluthat there’s little info like a wikipedia page. His bio-data is at http://www.du.ac.in/du/uploads/Faculty%20Profiles/2016/History/Nov2016_History_Kesavan.pdf

With that back drop let’s look at the words by Narayanan and Kesavan Veluthat. The paragraph deserves to be quoted in full:
“A specific consequence of the movement was the encouragement it gave to devadasis or handmaids of gods, tevadiccis  Tamil. As bhakti spread through the media of songs, dance and beauty, devadasis played a significant role in the popular appeal of the temple. Thus, Sundaramurtti Nayanar was involved with a devadasi. Cheraman Perumal Nayanar notes the reception given to Shiva by devadasis of all ages while he went out in a procession around the streets in Kailasa, and Andal was herself a devadasi who lived and died in the Srirangam temple”.
The reference to Sundaramurtti Nayanar was sourced from, according to references provided by the authors, K.A.Nilakanta Sastri’s ‘History of South India’. The authors do not mention the edition or date of publication of the book, a common citation required in academic papers to distinguish the source used. The 2009 Oxford University edition does not bear out the reference made and a google search took me to an archived version of the book which is an expanded version. The expanded version, published in 1958, does not exactly corroborate the quote (see Reference). However, folklore does corroborate it.

A work by scholars when citing a reference cannot use words, especially when connotations are loaded, to summarize what the source said. Sastri only says Nayanar wanted to marry a ‘dancing girl’ and a ‘sudra girl’. Of course one could argue that dancing girls were ‘devadasis’ in that era. If so the historian should suitably word it in his reference.

The Andal reference, the epicenter of the controversy, is handled in a very shoddy manner. An unpardonable error in a work by historians of Narayanan and Kesavan’s caliber. The source for the authors was T.A. Gopinatha Rao’s ‘History of Sri Vaishnavas” (1923, Madras University). Gopinatha Rao (1872-1919), an archeologist, is best known for his book “Elements of Hindu iconography”. ARchive.org provided a copy of ‘History of Sri Vaishnavas’ scanned in from a copy owned by University of Chicago. This is not a book but a lecture presented as part of a series titled “Sir Subrahmanyan Ayyar lectures” on 17th and 18th December 1917. After referring to Andal as Periyalvar’s daughter Gopinatha Rao writes:
“When she reached marriageable age, she refused to marry any one except the God Ranganatha of the Srirangam temple. The God appeared to the Alvar in a dream to declare before him his acceptance of the girl in marriage and ordered her to be brought to his residence at Srlrangam. Periyalvar took her there with great eclat and left her in her Lord's house and returned to his quiet residence at Srivilliputtur.”
According to mythology Andal was not left to live in Srirangam but that she merged with the presiding deity at Srirangam temple. Gopinatha Rao’s characterization of Andal being left at Srirangam in a marriage to the deity provided Narayanan and Kesavan the notion that she was a ‘devadasi’. Very unfortunately they did not elucidate that this was ‘conclusion’ they reached but stated it like it was a fact. Read into context with the paragraph talking about the “encouragement” given to the rise of devadasi tradition as ‘consequence’ of the Bhakti movement the authors too hastily clubbed Andal’s life into a traditional devadasi life.

The construction of this paragraph conflicts mildly with the authors’ earlier reference to Andal where they cite the work of Dr. K.C. Varadachari and write, “Since her love was so intense Ranganatha called her into the shrine where she disappeared”. I could not find the exact source of Varadachari’s that’s cited but I stumbled upon a treasure trove of Varadachari’s writings and biography. Online edition of books by that great scholar are available (see Reference) and his chapter on Andal in a book on Alvars does not  contradict anything cited from his work by Narayanan and Kesavan.

That said, the authors’ contention about rise of devadasis as a result of Bhakti movement is not without basis. Saskia Kersenboom-Story in ‘Nityasumangali’ underscores the connection, “The significance of Manikkavacakar for the tradition of the devadasi-nityasumangali consists in the fact that his work seems to represent a completion of the synthesis of the bardic Tamil culture and Brahmanic traditions of ritual and philosophical thought”.

It is instructive to quote K.A.Nilakanta Sastri on some of the eddies that accompanied the currents of the Bhakti movement. The Radha cult, Sastri says, “tended to degenerate into erotic excesses”. Of course, Sastri could not leave it there and he had to add, for good measure, “Nevertheless, Vaishnavism continued to be, in general, a noble and sweet influence on life”.

On the Saivaite Bhakti tradition there were, other than the Manickavasagar type, “other types of worshippers of Siva whose tenets and practices are gruesome and repellent to modern taste”. “Some of these sects, if not all, were addicted to the worship of the female principle, which often degenerated into licentious orgies”. Unlike the certificate of conduct he provides Vaishnavism Sastri doesn't provide one for Saivaites. One wonders.

It was a very complex era that needs to be recalled with due justice for the richness and counter currents and not sanitized to serve jingoistic narratives.

Though the Hindutva brigade and many Hindus today tend to characterize the devadasi tradition, stretching from 10th-20th century, as one glorious era when women were empowered and were repositories and transmitters of fine arts the latter day stigma attached to the tradition rankles them instinctively. That is why though the authors were not entirely wrong in calling Andal’s relationship as ‘devadasi’, literally slave of god, the characterization became a lightning rod.

Vairamuthu, other than mistakenly believing that the book was published by University of Indiana, did not misrepresent anything. The quote he used was accurate and the source of the authors was a Brahmin himself who delivered a lecture in memory of another Brahmin. It is pertinent to recall that Rajaji, a Congress stalwart and a darling of the Brahmins, went to the extent of even doubting whether Andal existed or was her name a pseudonym for a male. Rangarajan, a Vaishnavite author, better known by his pen name ‘Sujatha’, wondered how did a plain woman write such verses and concludes she was probably tutored by her adopted father Periyalvar. One wonders whether other alwars, all male, wrote poetry untutored.

The ever redoubtable Aravindan Neelakandan, considered an intellectual by the Hindutva brigade, something like the Dravidian party members calling Annathurai a ‘Bernard Shaw’, as usual spewed his conspiracy theories and discredited Vairamuthu’s contention that Andal was a voice of feminist assertion in an era when such assertion was unheard of.

Here is vaishnavite Sujatha on what Andal means, “In the 9th century she provided women an awakening that they are not objects of pleasure but privileged to awaken the sleeping lord to hear them. She taught women that they can attain oneness with the lord by their purity, external and internal, and that makes her a revolutionary woman”. (Translation by me. Original quote in references). I hope it is not Vairamuthu’s caste or profession as movie lyricist that robs him of his right to come to a conclusion similar to that reached by a vaishnavite writer who wrote pot boilers and dabbled in movies.

Neelakandan thrashes about and blames “Marxist or Dravidiainist Hinduphobia” for “speculative forays are invariably negative, deeply distortionary, seldom based on robust historic scholarship”. Unfortunately for Neelakandan it is Brahmin and anti-left historians whose opinions formed the basis of this unholy mess.

Narayanan and Kesavan are not lumpen brahmin hating Dravidian party stooges. Here’s what they write on Brahmin contribution in the Bhakti era. “Brahminism with its institutional base in the temple centered agrarian settlements, had emerged as the most dynamic progressive force”.

The authors pre-date Saskia Kersenboom in concluding “the ideology of Bhakti served as the cementing force bringing together kings, brahman priests and the common people in a harmonious manner”. Is this what Neelakandan calls ‘hinduphobia’? Oh wait, he did not bother to read the source but instead uses Vairamuthu, more importantly for his friendship with Karunanidhi, as a straw man.

Essentially Vairamuthu did not say anything that other Brahmins have not said. Vairamuthu’s only real sin was that he is a dark skinned non-Brahmin and that too from a caste known for martial prowess and not literary pursuits. Understandably the community which has come to believe in its own mythical collective intellectual prowess could not brook such impudence on behalf of a lower caste member.

The torrent of abuse from Brahmins in particular and Hindus in general was unbelievable for those who are unfamiliar with history. A vaishnavite savant coolly cited a poem that called for either beheading, when able, or, when not able, to shut one’s ears when faced with an abuse of the lord. Another sadhu gesticulating furiously recalled the myth of a crow being maimed and for good effect added “the crow, too, is dark”, a clear allusion to Vairamuthu’s dark skin.

A senior functionary of the ruling party, never one to be outdone in dishing out venom, called Vairamuthu a whore’s son. That functionary also gloated how Y.S.R. Reddy, a Christian (he rarely used his full name), died a gruesome death after slighting a Hindu god. “His flesh had to be scraped from the mountains where his helicopter crashed” said the functionary and people clapped. A handful of Hindutva brigade dissociated themselves from his remarks on Vairamuthu but coolly neglected to dissociate from his remarks on Y.S.R.Reddy. I’m sure Reddy’s religion had nothing to do with that speciously selective disavowal.

Not to be outdone by a BJP functionary popular movie director Bharathiraja decided to offer his support to Vairamuthu and issued explicit threats of violence to anyone who may harbor ideas of harming Vairamuthu. Sheer madness.

It is illustrative to recall how these same Brahmins encountered fellow vaishnavite Kamal Hassan, a matinee idol, who relishes pricking Hindu sentiments. Sure, they rant and gnash their teeth but compared to the scorn and ridicule and threat of violence against Vairamuthu it was nothing. Needless to say Kamal Hassan is not dark skinned either.

Vairamuthu has now released a comprehensive statement repeating the regret he had expressed when the controversy broke out. His speech, as he claims, was indeed respectful to Andal, largely. He has in the past used Andal’s poetry in his lyrics. His admiration of Andal is genuine.

It is interesting that the entire ire was focused on Vairamuthu and none was directed at the original authors of the quote. The conduct of Dinamani, a newspaper, which sponsored the event where Vairamuthu spoke was shameful cowardice. Instead of standing by their invitee, especially when all he did was quote, they buckled too eagerly and cravenly. In buckling they compounded their cowardice by asserting that the intent was only to honor the memory of literature and religion and not to besmirch it. Is this how a newspaper conducts itself? Alas there's no journalistic ethos left to be defended.

The Brahmin community which had chafed for decades at Karunanidhi’s taunts and was mostly mute in the face of lack of cohesive political power has burst forth in blind fury at a man whose list of sins include being friends with Karunanidhi and the time is opportune because Karunanidhi, who if he was not incapacitated would’ve neutralized the protests.

Ironically the Brahmin community really cared a damn about existential issues like the reservation policy for which one guy, K.M. Vijayan, is carrying on a valiant fight against heavy odds and he has already paid a huge price for that. This community that is wailing in every street for Andal did not raise a whimper when utterances like “the day there’s no Brahmin in MBBS course would be a golden day” were made. Apparently their rituals and religious icons matter much more than the welfare of their progeny.

The only silver lining in this fracas is that no Brahmin can, anymore, look smugly at other caste outfits when they act less than Socratic in encountering opposing views or inconvenient truths.

Post-Script: Dr. K.C. Varadachariar is a person to be read. He writes like Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. Well, they both were graduates from the philosophy department of Madras Christian College. M.G.S. Narayanan too is an alumnus of Madras Christian College. Before the Hindutva brigade runs around yelling, "ah see the Christian conspiracy" I suggest they read Varadachariar.

He was born of poor Brahmin parents but his beauty as a child was such that he attracted the attention of the local chieftain Narasinga Munaiyadaraiyan who, with the consent of the parents, brought him up. When his marriage with a girl of his own caste was about to take place it was stopped by the mysterious intervention of Siva who claimed him as his slave. A little later Sundara fell in love with two women, one a dancing-girl of Tiruvalur and the other a sudra girl of Tiruvorriyur. Their jealousies, it is said, could only be resolved by Siva himself acting as a messenger to one of them. Like the other nayanars, Sundara is also credited with many miracles and the contemporary Chera ruler, Cheraman Perumal, was his friend. They visited each other regularly and made their last journey to the abode of Siva in Mount Kailasa together, Sundara on a white elephant and Cheraman Perumal on a horse. He is said to have vanquished Smarta scholars in public debate at the court of Krishnadeva Raya. The acharyas of the sect were known as Maharajas and lived luxurious lives. The highest ambition of his followers was to become gopis and sport eternally with Krishna in his Heaven, an ideal which in practice degenerated into gross eroticism. The Koregaon Battle- Mahars in the Peshwa Regime and Indian Army

While Mumbai burns, yet again we're confronted with the question of 'what really happened' and history has become, again, a political football. Ambedkar and the Mahar regiment are being characterized by Hindutva Brahmins as stooges of Colonial masters and anti-Indians. Ah, anti-Indian, that catchall term to tar and feather anyone who disagrees with the Hindu fundamentalism that Narendra Modi peddles. "What is the proof that Mahars were ill treated by Peshwas" asked one in an attempt to discredit history and the current imbroglio. Let's find out.

Koregaon Memorial Pillar (Image courtesy Wikipedia)

The East India Company and the Peshwa regime were locked in a war for survival in the third and final Anglo-Maratha wars from November 1817-February 1818. The battle of Koregaon, on January 1st 1818, was the last battle of the war in which the British army, numbering around 900 and led by F.F. Staunton were met by the Peshwa army, numbering nearly 20,000 and led "by the Peshwa himself". The battle ended indecisively but Staunton's army was able to retreat honorably including "carrying of their wounded". However, since the war itself was a decisive victory the battle was noted for its glorious valor against staggering odds. A memorial, an obelisk, was erected to commemorate the battle at Koregaon. Twenty two of the names listed in the memorial plaque at the obelisk are names of those from the Mahar caste who fought in the battle against Peshwa army. Now, Mahars were considered low-caste and the Peshwa regime was a Brahmin regime.

Wars have always ben important sign posts in the collective memory as matter of pride or of shame depending on who lost and won and which community is doing the recollection. During the colonial era Indians, especially Hindus, always felt a need to rekindle martial pride to overcome the fact that a small profiteering company from a small island was ruling a vast subcontinent. To Hindus this was a sting even as they were ruing the loss of power during the 500 year Islamic rule. Amongst the Hindus castes like Mahars needed a retelling of the past when they were part of something significant, particularly, against the Brahmins.

Pankaj Mishra in "From the ruins of Empire: The intellectuals who remade Asia" recalls how Asians and even African-Americans felt glorious about the Japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905. Gandhi, an unknown lawyer in South Africa then, said "so far and wide have the roots of Japanese victory spread that we cannot now visualize all the fruit it will put forth". Jawaharlal Nehru, traveling to Harrow and a teenager then, remember hearing the news and how it put him in "high good humor". In America W.E.B. Du Bois "spoke of a worldwide eruption of 'colored pride'". Rabindranath Tagore led students in a victory march "around his little school compound". Mishra adds, "it mattered little to which class or race they belonged; the subordinate peoples of the world keenly absorbed the deeper implications-moral and psychological-of Japan's triumph".

Tamil literary tradition celebrates war and the exploits of war by their kings and chieftains. If BJP is afflicted by muscular nationalism fueled by religious pride Tamil Nadu politics is imbued with regional pride fueled by linguistic chauvinism. Often one could hear a plaintive recalling of the glorious past when a Tamil king undertook an expedition to the North and subdued the chieftains there. One story even mentions making the subdued chieftains act as mules to bring rocks from the north to construct a temple. Memories of war and what they mean for cultural and national pride is a fertile topic for sociologists and historians.

The Koregaon battle, a matter of pride for Mahars is a stigma of shame for the nationalists, many of whom are upper castes. The issue of Mahar regiment, their subsequent disbanding and demand for re-instatement became a major issue for Ambedkar, a Mahar.

The Mahars at one time constituted nearly 15% in the Bombay infantry in 1875 but with the introduction of the principle of recruiting based on classes identified as 'martial classes', mostly Punjabi, the Mahars lost and were 'excluded altogether from the Bombay army in 1892'. The ban on Mahar recruiting was only lifted in 1917 towards the end of World War I. "But after the war was over, caste prejudice led to that regiment being disbanded in 1922". "This time, though, the community had a strong advocate in the shape of B.R. Ambedkar", "a man who had grown up hearing stories from his soldier uncles and other community leaders about the great wrong done to the community". (Wilkinson 2015, 72-76).

It is little wonder then that Ambedkar chose to make the Battle of Koregaon a day to commemorate and the memorial a site of annual pilgrimage. Shraddha Kumbhojkar, a historian at the University of Pune,  has written a detailed chapter on the battle in "Sites of Imperial Memory: Commemorating Colonial Rule in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries". Khumbojkar quotes a pilgrim to the site on the day of commemoration, "We are here to remember our Mahar forefathers fought bravely and brought down the unjust Peshwa rule. Dr. Ambedkar has started this pilgrimage. He asked us to fight injustice. We have come to take inspiration from the brave soldiers and Dr. Ambedkar's memories".

Khumbojkar gives a grisly summary of the plight of Mahars under the Brahmin Peshwas.
"The 'untouchable people' who were born in certain so-called low-castes were given harsher punishments tan would be meted out to high caste people for the same crimes. They were forbidden to move in public spaces in the mornings and evenings lest their long shadows defile high caste people on the streets.....Human sacrifices of 'untouchable' people were not uncommon"
Mukta Salave, "a 15 year old girl" from the Mang community provides further grisly material.
"Under Bajiro's rule, if any mang or mahar happened to pass in front of the gymnasium, they cut off his head and used it to play 'bat ball', with their swords as bats and his head as a ball"
[I verified the quote of Mukta Salave that Khumbojkar provided based on the reference cited. The quote is from 'Women Writing in India: Voume 1 600 BC to the Eraly Twentieth Century edited by Susie Tharu and K. Lakita pg 214-216. Muktabai is mentioned without last name and she's 14 years old when she wrote that in 1855 in a school founded by Savtribhai and Jotiba Phule. The essay was reprinted in Dnyaodaya Centenary volumes edited by B.P Hivale in 1942.

Khumbojkar, intentionally or otherwise, omits mentioning that Mukta also added that Mahars practiced the same untouchability, including fear of being polluted by shadow, towards mangs. A good historian should not have omitted that]

Sure, one could argue that the quote from Mukta needs to be considered with caution but a tradition of violence even in present day India towards Dalits when incidents of horrendous violence are not uncommon her narration gets a vote of trust.

Two other sources concerning slavery in Peshwa regime gives a glimpse of the nature of the regime and the era. Many Indians still think that slavery was only an institution in West, notably America. Not at all. India had a very well established slavery system. In 'Slavery, Abolitionism and Empire in India, 1772-1843' Andrea Major quotes the colonial official Elphinstone who ponders on what to do with slaves escaping from the Peshwa and seeking protection in British encampments. When 6 slave dealers were arrested their victims included children.

An essay in "Slavery & South Asian History" edited by Indrani Chatterjee and Richard Eaton mentions "Slaves-especially women and children- were highly acceptable gifts and often circulated from household to household. We find Peshva Balaji Bajirao acknowledging the gift of a European musical instrument and 'two women of the best quality'". In another letter Balaji Bajiao writes "you were instructed to buy and send me two beautiful ten-year old Hindu girls". "Definitely send on [my] personal account the following sort- two high-quality, pure Hindus of good caste, ten year olds".

When upper caste Brahmin fundamentalists shake their fists and ask "where is the proof" we struggle to come up with proof because history, in India, was never written in the Greco-Roman style and when written, at all, in the pre-colonial era, they were mostly poetic hagiographies by upper caste writers, mostly Brahmins, in the service of the Kshatriyas. Only with the arrival of Colonial era do we even get credible records. Sure the colonial era record keeping has its share of embellishments and biases but evidences such as the above are direct. From Bajirao's letter requesting ten year old girls of 'good caste' one can make an interesting inference that in his sick mind he doesn't consider girls of low caste to even be slaves.

Characterizing Ambedkar as a stooge of British is an old saw. Arun Shourie, a Brahmin and a former member of BJP government, used to be a journalist and then a hack historian. In his avatar as historian he was the darling of the Hindutva brigade particularly for writing his extremely polemical hack job of a book about Ambedkar, "Worshipping false gods: Ambedkar and the facts which have been erased". Ambedkar's differences with Gandhi, the Congress and the Freedom movement are legendary and they played out in public stage. There are no secrets there. William Shirer was shocked how Ambedkar, in his arguments during the Round Table Conference, appeared to be supportive of the Colonial regime. But, neither Shirer nor Shourie can even remotely appreciate the deep wounds in the psyche of Ambedkar due to India's caste system.

Sir Samuel Hoare, quotes Arun Shourie, in a letter to the Viceroy commends Ambedkar's 'good behavior' at the Round Table Conference and wants to 'strengthen his hands' by acceding to Ambedkar's demands to re-establish the Mahar regiment in the army. Then Shourie asks if Ambedkar was truly "serious" about the demand and casts an aspersion by citing a letter written by Roger Lumely, Governor of Bombay. Lumely writes that "does not put his weight" behind the recruitment of Mahars and says that the recruitment would've been better "if he were really keen to help". This is revisionism or plain failure of a journalist posing as historian.

Steven Wilkinson lays bare how the attitude towards caste continued to impact recruitment from non-martial classes. "There was no army-wide policy against employing Scheduled Castes, but most infantry and armored units recruited only from martial classes, which led to the same results as if there had been a formal policy. The fact that the essence of the martial-class policy had not been dismantled, though, was admitted in secret correspondence between the Indian Army and the Indian Office". A shameful coverup literally of non-recruitment was indulged by the Army and the government to pretend all was well. It was not Ambedkar who failed but it was the Colonial empire in cahoots with upper caste that were the cause for failure in recruiting Mahars.

Wilkinson provides further evidence of institutional discrimination. In later years when Jagjivan Ram, a defense minister and from a low-caste, demanded to know if India's policy of reservation for Scheduled Castes was being followed in the army General Manekshaw sent a note that as per the law army was excluded from the reservation policy but nevertheless there was Mahar regiment and nearly 15% were Scheduled Castes below the rank of officers. Now, Manekshaw was a war hero and there was little Jagjivan Ram could do then. Also, it is easy to guess that the presence of 15% Scheduled Caste in reality means little because the army recruits, particularly the non-officer class, were mostly drawn from families stuck in poverty and Dalits constituted a majority of them.

A Brahmin sitting in California advises that the government should just mow down with bullets the Dalit rioters. I wonder what would be his suggestion about the thugs who destroyed a monument in broad day light and created a fear psychosis in the heartland of India?

Dalits have suffered systemic oppression of the inhuman kind, their icons are subjected to merciless vivisection to show up their weaknesses and contradictions, their history is glossed over when it is written and mostly swept under the carpet. Whether it is Ambedkar or Gandhi one can freely criticize them but motives matter and the kind of criticism heaped matters and finally facts matter. Of course one doesn't expect honor from the Hindutva brigade and this blog is not meant to educate them. Rather this is for those who are curious about facts and open to reason.
