Destroy The Trump Candidacy Lest It Destroys USA and GOP

The party of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan has been hijacked by a clownish racist and misogynist running for the Presidency. At this point if Donald Trump's candidacy is not stopped it'll destroy the GOP and America even if he loses the nomination. The GOP is fooling itself if it thinks Trump will flame out. Trump, as GOP nominee, is a very real prospect at this time and the GOP will face an electoral disaster worse than what it faced with Barry Goldwater as nominee.

Donald Trump is the most consummate politician this season and has shamed professional politicians and for the GOP to be in denial of his political talents is dangerous to the nation. It is cliche to cast an election as the most important election in a generation. I've heard that characterization from 2004 till 2012 for every election. 2016 is no different. America is at the cross-roads, again. Racial tensions have never been this high in America since the days of Rodney King. The world is spinning out of control in the middle-east, an explosive tinder box in a good day let alone when it is messy. Like 2012 it appears the GOP is all set to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Romney was a good man and lost because he was a bad candidate. Trump is a bad man and a good candidate. The latter is scary.

Recently Dana Milbank wrote in the Washington Post that he'll eat the paper that his column was printed on if Trump does not drop out before the first ballot is cast in the Iowa caucuses and yet today the New York Times reports that the GOP is in full panic mode at the prospect that Trump may not only not drop before Iowa but could very well become the party's standard bearer. A GOP strategist told the times that if Trump is the nominee the GOP will face an "electoral wipe out". Trump has upended the entire class of political punditry in America.

No candidate in US political history has gone from strength to strength fueled by insulting one group after another. At so many points so far pundits predicted the demise of Trump's candidacy after each round of abuse hurled by him at some group or person. Trump called Mexican immigrants rapists in the very speech that he announced his candidacy and saw his popularity surge contrary to the expectations of the punditry class and all decent citizens. Then he cast aspersions on whether John McCain, a decorated war veteran and venerated for having suffered torture after being captured, was a hero. The punditry guffawed "it's over, he crossed a line. Insulting a decorated war veteran who is a sitting US senator and a former nominee in the GOP primaries is harakiri". Trump laughed his way to a further surge in the polls. Then he went on a war path against Fox News host Megan Kelly, who, during a GOP debate, asked if he insulted women as a habit. Trump suggested Kelly was menstruating. Punditry went into a paroxysm of shock saying "Megan Kelly is a beloved anchor by the Republican base, it's over now". Trump's rating remained solid. The realization slowly dawned that Trump's base loved him for his bombast and ability to insult in the name of being courageously politically incorrect. The insults continued and they got worse.

Ronald Reagan famously formulated the 11th commandment, "don't speak ill of your fellow GOP candidates". Trump inverted it "speak nothing but ill of your fellow candidates". He mocked Jeb Bush as "low energy". During debates put-downs and retorts were his favorite ways to answer. He wondered why Rand Paul, given his low ratings, was even on the stage. To John Kasich he retorted "I've made billions I don't have to answer to you". On the trail he wondered if Carly Fiorina's face was worthy enough to be President. When candidates like Rick Perry and Bobby Jindal tried to take on Trump and eventually quit the race he openly guffawed and gloated.

The Trump candidacy is the more fact free campaign in politics today. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan tartly said "you are entitled to your own opinions but not to your own facts". Trump functions with circular logic where he claims something and then shows tweets from supporters as factual evidence in support of the claim he made in a vacuum. Political columnist Chris Cilizza wrote for the Post on the dangerous trend where candidates pay no price for dishing out patented lies and supporters care a damn about it. Cilizza lamented how thanks to bipartisan bashing of mainstream media there is no umpire today that is trusted by the electorate and this creating the space for a fantasy world where Trump feels free to create his own facts with impunity.

It is said that one should not get into a mud fight with a pig because at some point the pig starts enjoying. Other GOP candidates have shied away from engaging with Trump for several reasons including not wanting to be targets of his insults and for fear of alienating his voters who they'd need if and when he drops out of the race. Even billionaire king makers and donors like the Koch brothers have kept their distance the now nascent campaign to take down Trump. When Trump brazenly claimed that "thousands of Muslims" in Jersey city cheered on 9/11 not even Chris Christie, known for being brash and feisty and sitting governor of New Jersey, fumbled in repudiating what every news outlet called out as a lie. Armed with a critical endorsement in New Hampshire today Christie has unequivocally called out  Trump on his lie.

Forget about sparring with candidates on policy Trump revels in hurling abusive invectives and brazen clownish attacks. When Ben Carson's biography was being questioned Trump saw an opening to attack Carson who was threatening his position in Iowa. At a rally Trump launched a diatribe complete with a circus routine mocking claims of Carson having escaped becoming a murderer in his teens when his attempt to stab a classmate was foiled by that classmates belt buckle. Stepping away from the podium Trump, a candidate for the Oval office, parted his suit and played with his buckle and ranted "how can it stop a knife". Trump reached new lows when he openly mocked a disabled reporter for his disability. There was, in what has now become routine, a collective shocked gasp from the nation and the candidate sailing on unruffled. Practically at this point there is no use pretending that there is any line of decency that Trump cannot cross without paying a political price.

The GOP in large part should blame itself for the creation of Trump. I've earlier argued that Trump is a symbol of America's decline of intellectualism. That is still true. Only in an intellectually bankrupt America could an air-head like Sarah Palin become the nominee for the vice-presidency and drag the party into the morass of intellectual vacuity. The tea party insurrection that propelled the GOP from doldrums of 2008 to capturing, first, the House and then the Senate was brazenly anti-intellectual and harbored strains of racism within it. The GOP leadership were content to ride that tiger to electoral success and pretended they were riding a populist insurrection against a socialist President. In those days Trump ran around town claiming that the President was not US born and the GOP leadership silently encouraged it. Sarah Palin and Trump should've been stopped long ago.

It is sheer denial by the GOP establishment to even think they can control the genie. The GOP base is in full blown revolt against the establishment. It's not just Trump that's a headache for the GOP. Ben Carson makes Donald Trump look rational. Carson is a shame and an embarrassment. Then there is Ted Cruz whose possible win of the nomination is already sending a chill down the spine of his fellow senators who view him as the most dangerous flamethrower around.

A few points to be fair to Trump supporters though. When Hillary Clinton apologizes and pledges that she'll never again use the words "illegal immigrant" it makes a complete mockery of the laws of the land. Faced with the prospect of a presidential candidate refusing call illegal aliens, well, illegal aliens the electorate lurches towards one who calls them rapists silently hoping that such heated rhetoric is for the campaign trail and that while better language will come when he's in office he may not sell out the nation in pursuit of votes. To some extent Trump supporters are itching to see somebody call a spade, not just a spade but a bloody spade. And Trump is obliging gladly.

Obama's Syria policy is in tatters and he has time only to mock Republicans of refusing to admit Syrian refugees because they are afraid of "widows and orphans". This is demagoguery at its naked worst. His own Democrats then deserted him and forced him to face the issue that the people in general, including security analysts, do have genuine fears about admitting Syrian refugees onto US soil. This is when Trump feels secure to speak offensively and gets a pass for plain speaking.

Donald Trump is an indecent man who hopes to get elected to the highest office of the land by preying on the fears and insecurities of the electorate. If the GOP establishment thinks they can capitalize on the excitement generated by his candidacy they'll be disappointed to know that they will reap a whirlwind. Trump is politically savvy and is an adroit campaigner. Trump is no fool, just a knave.

All this "oh well he has no ground game, he cannot win primaries" is empty wishful thinking. Trump is methodical in taking down opponents, structuring well attended rallies in key states and sucking the oxygen out of the room thus drowning out the message of the other candidates. When Trump saw that Carson was materializing as a threat in Iowa he moved quickly and took Carson head on. It is this pugnacity and nimbleness that his supporters see will be an asset in the Oval office. Trump, I'd argue, is the best politician amongst the GOP candidates. No candidate, to my knowledge, has visited more states than him, nobody has had bigger crowds, nobody is better funded, nobody gets as much free air time as he does from the networks, nobody has sustained a commanding lead over such a long period of time. Trump is here to stay and therein lies the danger.

Assuming that the GOP electorate comes to its senses and Trump does lose the nomination or better still he does indeed drop out before Iowa caucuses the damage to the GOP brand is still considerable. Candidates like Carson and Cruz only add to the "GOP crazies" narrative. For a party that vowed to do better with minorities after the Romney debacle of asking illegal immigrants to self-deport this is a dangerous place to be.

It is time the GOP leadership shows, well, leadership and destroys the Trump candidacy.

அமெரிக்காவில் இந்த வருடம் கிறிஸ்துமஸ் செப்டம்பரிலேயே வந்து விட்டது, போப் பிரான்சிஸின் வருகையால். தேசமே திருவிழாக் கோலம் பூண்டது என்றால் மிகையில்லை. அமெரிக்காவில் கத்தோலிக்கர்கள் சிறுபான்மையினர் என்பது கவனத்தில் கொள்ளத் தக்கது. இது கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் மதத் தலைவர் என்பதற்காக மட்டும் நிகழ்ந்துவிடவில்லை. போப் பெனடிக்ட் வந்திருந்தால் இவ்வளவு வரவேற்பு இருந்திருக்குமா என்பது சந்தேகமே. அப்படியெனில் இந்தக் கோலாகலம் ஏன் நிகழ்ந்தது என்ற கேள்விக்கு விடைக் காண நாம் அமெரிக்க அரசியிலின் போக்கு, அமெரிக்கச் சமூகம் மற்றும் அரசியில் அமைப்புகளுக்கு வாடிகனுடனான, குறிப்பாகப் போப்புகளுடனான, உறவு மற்றும் போப் எனும் பதவியை வகிப்பவரின் ஆளுமை என்று பல தரப்புகளில் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய நிகழ்வு. 

ஒரு காலத்தில் அயர்லாந்திலிருந்து குடியேறிய ஐரிஷ்-அமெரிக்கர்கள், பெரும்பான்மையோர் கத்தோலிக்கர்கள், வெறுத்து ஒதுக்கப்பட்டவர்கள். வேலையிடங்களில் வெளிப்படையாக “ஐரிஷ்காரர்கள் விண்ணப்பிக்கத் தேவையில்லை” என்று அறிவித்த காலமுண்டு. கென்னடி ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தலில் போட்டியிட்ட போது அவருடைய ஐரிஷ்-கத்தோலிக்கப் பின்புலம் விவாதத்துக்குள்ளானது. அவர் அமெரிக்க ஜனாதிபதியாகச் சுயமாகச் செயல்படுவாரா இல்லை வாடிகனுக்குக் கட்டுப்பட்டு ஒரு கத்தோலிக்கராகச் செயல் படுவாரா என்ற கேள்வி கிட்டத்தட்ட ஓர் அவதூறு பிரசாரமாகவே முன்னெடுக்கப் பட்டது. அக்கேள்விக்குப் பதில் சொல்லும் விதமாகக் கென்னடி மதச் சார்பின்மைக் குறித்து ஒரு பேருரையாற்றினார். அமெரிக்கா வாடிகன், கத்தோலிக்கர்கள் மற்றும் போப் ஆகியோருடனான உறவு மாற்றமடைந்த புள்ளியை சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால் போப் ஜான் பால் (இரண்டாமவர். இவரை இனி போப் ஜான் பால் என்றே சுருக்கமாகக் குறிப்பிடுகிறேன்) அவர்களின் 1979-ஆம் ஆண்டு வருகையைத்தான் குறிப்பிட வேண்டும். 

போலந்து நாட்டில் கரோல் வொத்தெலாவாகப் பிறந்தவர் போப் ஜான் பால் ஆனபோது வாடிகனின் வரலாற்றில் வரவேற்கத் தக்க மாற்றங்களுக்குப் பிள்ளையார் சுழி போட பட்டது. இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டு என்றில்லை வாடிகனின் வரலாற்றிலேயே கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபைக்கு ஒரு கௌரவத்தைத் தேடித் தந்தவர் போப் ஜான் பால் என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது. தான் மதத் தலைவர் என்பதையும் தாண்டி தன்னை மானுடத்தின் குரலாகவும், சாமானியர்களும் நெருங்கும் சாதாரணனாகவும், கம்யூநிசத்தை வீழ்த்தும் ஓர் ஆன்ம எழுச்சியாகவும் உலகுக்கு அறிமுகமான ஜான் பால் அநேகரை வாடிகனைப் பற்றிய அவரவர் பிம்பங்களை மாற்றியமைக்கக் காரணமாயிருந்தார். 

போப் பிரான்சிஸுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கோலாகல வரவேற்பை பல வர்ணனையாளர்கள் “Rock star welcome” என்று ஒப்பீடு செய்தனர். இந்த “rock star” ஒப்பீடு ஒரு மதத்தலைவருக்கு எப்போதிருந்து ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது என்று ஒருவர் துல்லியமாக அடையாளம் காண்பித்தார். போப் ஜான் பால் 1979-இல் அமெரிக்கா வந்த போது நியு யார்க் நகரில் மேடிஸன் ஸ்கொயர் கார்டன் எனும் பேரரங்கில் பல்லாயிரகணக்கானோர் நிரம்பி வழியும் ஒரு கூட்டத்தில் பேசுவதற்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டது. போப் பேசுவதற்கு ஆரம்பிக்கும் போதே கூட்டம் ஆர்ப்பரித்தது. அவர் பேசினால் கேட்க முடியாத அளவு உற்சாகக் கூக்குரல்கள். அப்போது போப் மைக்கருகே குனிந்து ‘உ உ உ உம்’ என்று ஊத ஆரம்பித்தார். கூட்டத்தின் கூச்சல் குறைய ஆரம்பித்தது. கடைசியாகப் போப் “ஊஊஊஊம்ம்ம்” என்று நீண்ட ஓர் உச்சாடனத்தோடு முடித்தார். கூட்டம் அமைதியானது போப்பும் தன் உரையை முடித்தார். பிறகு தான் அங்கிருந்த ஊடகக் காரர்களுக்குப் புரிந்தது போப் செய்த உச்சாடணம் ஒரு போலந்து நாட்டு நாட்டர் வழக்கென்று. வாசகர்களே இங்குக் கொஞ்சம் சிந்தித்துப் பாருங்கள். போப் என்பவர் ஆயிரத்து ஐநூறு ஆண்டுக்கு மேல் பாரம்பர்யம் உள்ள, பற்பலக் கோடி உறுப்பினர்கள் கொண்ட, பல நாடுகளின் வரலாற்றோடு பின்னிப் பிணைந்த ஓர் ஆல மரத்தின் தலைமை அப்படிப்பட்டவர் ஒரு பேருரையின் ஆரம்பத்தில் மக்களோடு மக்களாக இணைந்து உற்சாகத்தில் கலப்பது போல் கலந்து அதை ஒழுங்குப் படுத்துவதென்பது போப் என்பவரைப் பற்றியிருந்த அபிப்பிராயத்தைப் புரட்டிப் போட்டதோடல்லாமல் வாடிகன் ஓர் இறுகிய மத நிறுவனம் என்ற எண்ணத்தைத் தூக்கி அடித்தது. அப்போது பிறந்தது தான் இந்த rock star எனும் ஒப்புமை.

போப் ஜான் பாலின் மறைவுக்குப் பிறகு பதவிக்கு வந்த போப் பெனடிக்ட் ஜான் பால் போலல்லாமல் திருச்சபையினை மீண்டும் சடங்களாலும், தத்துவ விவாதங்களை ஒரு கட்டுக்குள் செய்யும் ஓருறைந்த ஸ்தாபனமாக மீள் உருவாக்கம் செய்யத் தலைப்பட்டார். அப்படியொரு விவாதம் உலகெங்கும் பெரும் கலவரங்கள் நடக்க ஏதுவாகிப் போனது. ஆனால் வாடிகன் வரலாற்றிலேயே அதிர்வுகளைக் கிளப்பும் விதமாகப் போப் பெனடிக்ட் உடல்நிலைக் காரணமாக ராஜினாமா செய்தார். வாடிகனின் வரலாற்றில் 741-ஆம் ஆண்டிற்குப் பிறகு முதன் முறையாக ஒரு ஐரோப்பியர் அல்லாதவரும், முதல் ஜெஸுயிட்டும் ஆன ஹோர்ஹே பெர்கோக்லியோ புனித பிரான்சிஸின் பெயர் கொண்டு போப் பிரான்சிஸ் ஆனார். 

கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபயையும், கிறித்தவத்தையும் (ஏன், இஸ்லாமும் கூட) நிறுவன மதங்கள் என்று வாயில் நுரைப் பொங்க எள்ளி நகையாடுபவர்களுக்கு வரலாற்றின் அரிச்சுவடி கூடத் தெரியாதென்பதே உண்மை. கிறித்தவமும் அது சார்ந்த நிறுவனங்களும் அவை புழங்கிய சமூகங்களும் ஒன்றோடொன்று உறவாடி, உரையாடி, முரன்பட்டு, எதிர்த்து, இசைந்து ஒரு மாபெரும் வரலாற்று முரணியக்கத்தின் மூலமாக ஒன்றையொன்று செழுமை படுத்தியிருக்கிறது என்பதே உண்மை. அந்த முரணியக்கத்தில் பற்பல ஆளுமைகள் பெரும் விவாதங்களை முன்னெடுத்து திருச்சபையினையும் சமூகத்தின் போக்கின் மீதும் முத்திரைப் பதித்துள்ளனர். அப்படியொருவராக இன்று பிரான்சிஸ் பார்க்கப் படுகிறார். 

புனித பிரான்சிஸின் பெயரை தேர்ந்தெடுத்தற்கு ஏற்றவாறு போப் பிரான்சிஸ் ஆரம்பம் முதலே எளிமையைக் கடைப் பிடிக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். சம்பிரதாயமான படாடோபங்களைத் தன் உடையலங்காரத்திலும், நிகழ்வுகளிலும் தவிர்க்க ஆரம்பித்தார் போப் பிரான்சிஸ். 

இந்தப் பிண்ணனிகளில் பொருத்திப் பார்க்க வேண்டிய ஒரு நிகழ்வு தான் போப் பிரான்சிஸின் அமெரிக்க விஜயம். 

பராக் ஒபாமாவும் அமெரிக்கக் காங்கிரசும் கட்சிப் பேதமின்றி ஒருமித்துப் பரிபூரணச் சிகப்புக் கம்பள வரவேற்பு கொடுத்தனர் போப் பிரான்சிஸுக்கு. ஒபாமா, சம்பிரதாயங்களுக்கு மாறாக, நேரடியாகப் போப்பை விமான நிலயத்திற்கே சென்று வரவேற்றார்.

போப் பிரான்சிஸ் அமெரிக்கா வருவதற்கு முன்பே பொருளாதார ஏற்றத் தாழ்வுகள், முதலாளித்துவம், புவி வெப்பமாதல், கருக் கலைப்பு, சட்ட விரோதமாகக் குடியேறுபவர்கள், ஓரின சேர்க்கையாளர்களின் திருமண உரிமைகள் ஆகியவை பற்றியெல்லாம் கொண்டிருந்த கருத்துகள் அமெரிக்க அரசியலுக்குள் சூடாக விவாதிக்கப்படுபவை. அதுவும் இது ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தல் நடக்கும் ஆண்டு ஆகையால் அந்தப் பிரச்சனைகள் குறித்துக் கட்சி சார்பு நிலைகளையொட்டி விவாதக் களமே வெப்பமேறியிருக்கிறது. 

போப் பிரான்சிஸின் கருத்துகளை அமெரிக்காவின் இரு பிரதானக் கட்சியினரும் மாறி, மாறிக் கொண்டாடினர் அக்கருத்துகள் அவர்களுக்குச் சாதகமாக இருக்கும் பட்சத்தில். அவர் முன் வைத்த கருத்துகளை நாம் அந்த அரசியல் விவாதத்தினூடாகவே அலசலாம். 

2008-ஆம் ஆண்டு அமெரிக்கப் பொருளாதாரத்தின் ஆணிவேரே அசைத்துப் பார்க்கப் பட்டது. முதலாளித்துவம் மிகத் தீவிரமான பரிசீலனைக்குட்பட்டது. சமூகத்தில் பெருகி வரும் பொருளாதார வேற்றுமைகள் அமரிக்கர்களைத் தங்கள் தேசம் இன்னமும் சாமானியர்களின் முன்னேற்றத்துக்கான வழி கோலும் சமூகமா இல்லை ஒரு நிலப் பிரபுத்துவ அமைப்பின் கூறுகளை உருவாக்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறதா என்ற கேள்வி இன்று பிரதானமாக இருக்கிறது. ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் இந்தப் பிரச்னைக்குத் தீர்வு பணக்காரர்கள் மீது மென்மேலும் வரி விதிப்பது என்பது உட்பட, அவர்கள் பார்வையில், ஏழைகள் மற்றும் நடுத்தர வர்கத்தினருக்கு நன்மைப் பயக்குமென்று நினைக்கும் சில வழி முறைகளை முன் வைக்கின்றனர். குடியரசுக் கட்சியினரோ வரி விதிப்பு பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஊறு விளைவித்து அது முன்னேற்றம் தேவைப்படுகிற நடுத்தர வர்கத்தையே அதிகம் பாதிக்குமென்றும், வரி விலக்குகள் அல்லது வரிக் குறைப்பின் மூலமாகப் பொருளாதாரத்தை மென்மேலும் வளர்க்க முடியும் என்றும், தொழில் முறையில் அரசாங்கத்தின் தலையீடுகள் குறைக்கப் பட வேண்டுமென்றும் வாதிடுகின்றனர். போப் பிரான்சிஸ் இதில் நேரடியாக எந்தச் சார்பையும் வெளிப் படுத்தவில்லை ஆனால் அவர் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பொருளாதார வேற்றுமைகளைப் பற்றிப் பேசுவது தங்கள் அக்கறையையே பிரதிபலிப்பதாக ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியினர் கருதுகின்றனர். 

வெள்ளை மாளிகையில் பேசுகையில் போப் பிரான்சிஸ் புவி வெப்பமயமாதல் பற்றித் தன் கவலையைத் தெரிவித்தார். இந்நிலைப்பாடும் ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியினருக்கு உவப்பானது. குடியரசுக் கட்சியைச் சார்ந்த பலரும் புவி வெப்பமயமாதல் என்பதையே சந்தேகிக்கிறவர்களும் அப்படியே அதை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டாலும் அதற்கு மனித செயல்களே காரணமென்பதையோ ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளாதவர்கள். மேலும் புவி வெப்பமாதலை தடுப்பதிலோ மிதப் படுத்துகிறோம் என்ற போர்வையில் அரசாங்கம் தொழில் முறைகளில் தலையீடு செய்வதையும், பொருளாதார முடிவுகளின் போக்கினை மாற்றும் அரசாங்க கொள்கை முடிவுகள் ஆகியவை பொருளாதாரத்தைப் பாதிக்கும் என்பது குடியரசுக் கட்சியினரின் ஆட்சேபனை. புவி வெப்பமயமாதல் என்பது விஞ்சானப் பூர்வமாக நிரூபிக்கப் பட்ட ஒன்று. ஆனால் ஒபாமாவும் அவர் கட்சியினரும் முன் வைக்கும் பல கொள்கைகள் அதைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்தும் வழிகளை உண்டுப் பண்ணுபவையல்ல மாறாக அதன் பெயரில் பல சட்டங்களை இயற்றி பொருளாதாரத்தினை அரசாங்கத்தின் ஆளுமைக்குக் கீழ் கொண்டு வரும் நீர்த்துப் போன சோஷலிசம் என்றால் மிகையில்லை. 

ஐ.நா சபையில் பேசும் போதும் போப் பிரான்சிஸ் புவி வெப்பமாதல் பற்றியே ஆணித்தரமாகப் பேசினார். மனித உரிமைகளுள் ஒன்றாக “சூழியல் உரிமை” உண்டு என்று புதியதோர் கோட்பாட்டை முன் வைத்தார். மனிதன் மீது சுற்று சூழல் செலுத்தும் பாதிப்பைக் குறிப்பிட்டு சுற்று சூழலுக்கு ஊறு விளைவிக்கும் எதுவும் மனிதனுக்கு நேரடியாக ஊறு விளைவிப்பவை என்றார். எல்லா மதங்களிலும் சுற்றுச் சூழல் நன்மை அடிப்படையிலேயே உள்ளது என்றும் சொன்னார். 

ஒருங்கே கூட்டப்பட்ட அமெரிக்கப் பாராளுமன்றத்தின் இரு சபைகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களிடையே பல முக்கியப் பிரச்னைகளைத் தொட்டுப் பேசினார் போப். இப்படி விருந்தினருக்காக இரு சபையோரையும் ஒருங்கே கூட்டுவதென்பது ஒரு பெரும் அங்கீகாரம். 

மதம், சித்தாந்தம் மற்றும் பொருளாதார அமைப்பு ஆகியவற்றின் பெயரால் நடக்கும் வன்முறைக்கெதிராக விழிப்புனர்வுடன் இருக்க வேண்டுமென்று உரைத்த போப் மேலும் இன்றைய நடப்புலகில் நுண்மைகளைக் காணும் சக்தியிழந்து உலகை கறுப்பு வெள்ளையாக அவரவர் பார்வையிலே பார்ப்பது வன்முறையை வளர்க்கும் என்று எச்சரித்தார். மேலும் தன் பேராயர்களுடன் தன் திருச்சபை மரணத் தண்டனைக்கெதிரான நிலைப்பாடு கொண்டதையும் வலியுறுத்தினார். இங்கே கவனிக்க வேண்டியது முன்னேறிய நாடுகளிலேயே இன்றும் மரணத் தண்டனை வழக்கத்திலுள்ள நாடு அமெரிக்கா. அமெரிக்கர்களிடமும் அமெரிக்கா பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்களிடமும் மரணத் தண்டனைக்கு வரவேற்புண்டு. பிறகு வேறொரு முக்கியப் பிரச்னைக்குத் திரும்பினார் போப். 

அமெரிக்கா எதிர் நோக்கியிருக்கும் இன்னொரு மிக முக்கியமான பிரச்சினை சட்ட விரோதமாகக் குடியேறிவர்கள். கிட்டத் தட்ட 14 மில்லியன் பேர் சட்ட விரோதமாகக் குடியேறியவர்கள். ஹிஸ்பானிக்குகள் என்றழைக்கப் படுபவர்கள் அதில் பெரும் பகுதியினர். அவர்களை வெளியேற்றுவதென்பது நடை முறைக்கு ஒவ்வாதது அதே சமயம் அவர்களுக்குப் பொது மன்னிப்பின் மூலமாகக் குடியுரிமை வழங்குவதென்பதையும் அமெரிக்கர்களில் பெரும்பாலோர் எதிர்க்கின்றனர், குறிப்பாகக் குடியரசுக் கட்சியினர். 1980-களில் ரேகன் அப்படியொரு பொது மன்னிப்பை வழங்கிய போது 3 மில்லியனாக இருந்த சட்ட விரோதமாகக் குடியேறியவர்கள் இப்போது 14 மில்லியன். பொது மன்னிப்புக் கொடுத்ததே மேன்மேலும் அலயெனத் திரண்டு வருவதற்கு உற்சாகத்தைக் கொடுத்தது. இதில் திருச்சபையும் ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியினரும் மனிதாபனமே தங்களை உந்துகிறது, பொது மன்னிப்புக் கொடுக்க, என்று கூறினாலும் அவரவர்க்கு அதில் ஆதாயமில்லாமலில்லை. ஹிஸ்பானிக்குகள் பெரு வாரியாகத் தங்களுக்கேயான வாக்கு வங்கியென்பது ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியினருக்கு உவப்பான ஒன்று. அதே போல் அவர்களில் பெரும்பாலோர் கத்தோலிக்கர்கள் என்பது கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபைக்கு முக்கியமானது. முடிவாகக் குடும்ப அமைப்பின் முக்கியத்துவம் பற்றிக் கூறி தன் உரையை முடித்துக் கொண்டார். 

போப் பிரான்சிஸின் அமெரிக்கப் பிரயானத்தின் இன்னொரு முக்கிய அம்சம் ஒரு ஹிஸ்பானிக் பாதிரியாரை, ஜுனிபெரோ செர்ரா, புனிதராக அறிவிப்பது. ஹிஸ்பானிக் அமெரிக்கர்களுக்குப் பெரு உவகைத் தந்த நிகழ்வு அது. ஆனால் அதுவே கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் சங்கடமான கறுப்புப் பக்கத்தை மீண்டும் பொது வெளிக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தது. ஜூனிபெரோ செர்ராவின் மத மாற்றங்கள் அமெரிக்கப் பூர்வக் குடிகளின் மீது கட்டற்ற வன்முறையைக் கையாண்டதன் மூலமே சாத்தியமாயிற்று. பூர்வக் குடி அமெரிக்கர்கள் இதற்கு எதிராக வாடிகனுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தனர் ஆனால் பலனில்லை. 

போப் பிரான்சிஸின் மேற்சொன்னக் கருத்துகளுக்காக அமெரிக்காவின் சமூகத் தாராளவாதிகள் (social liberals) கொண்டாடிய போது குடியரசுக் கட்சியினர் நமுட்டு சிரிப்புடன் “காத்திருங்கள் அவர் அடுத்து குடும்ப அமைப்பு, கருக் கலைப்பு, ஓரிண சேர்க்கையாளர்களின் திருமண உரிமை ஆகியன பற்றிப் பேசப் போகிறார் அப்போது தெரியும் அவர் யார் பக்கமென்று” எனக் காத்திருந்தனர். 

போப் பிரான்சிஸ் அமெரிக்கா வருவதற்கு முன் சமீபத்தில் இரு நிகழ்வுகள் அமெரிக்க அரசியல் மற்றும் சமூகப் பரப்பில் பெரும் கொந்தளிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியன. அமெரிக்காவின் உச்ச நீதி மன்றம் ஒவ்வொரு மாகாணமும் ஓரின சேர்க்கையாளர்களிம் திருமண உரிமையை மறுக்கும் சட்டங்கள் சட்ட விரோதமானவை என்று தீர்ப்பளித்து அமெரிக்கச் சமூக அமைப்பில் ஒரு மாபெரும் மாற்றத்திற்கு அடி கோலிட்டது. மீண்டும் அமெரிக்கா கட்சி ரீதியாகப் பிரிந்தது. குடியரசுக் கட்சியினரில் சிலர் ஓரின சேர்க்கை என்பதே இயற்கைக்கு முரனானது என்று நம்புபவர்கள், அப்படி எண்ணாதவர்கள் கூடத் திருமண உறவென்பது இரு பாலாருக்கிடையேதான் நடைபெற வேண்டுமென்று எண்ணுபவர்கள் அதிகம். கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையும் திருமணமென்பது இரு பாலாருக்கிடையேதான் என்ற நிலைப்பாடுடையது. ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியினர் தங்களை ஏதோ மனித உரிமைகளின் ஏக போக உரிமையாளர்களாகக் காட்டிக் கொள்வது நகைப்புக்குரியது. திருமணப் பாதுகாப்புச் சட்டம் எனும் ஷரத்தில் கையெழுத்திட்டதே பில் கிளிண்டன் தான். ஹிலாரியும், ஒபாமாவும் 2008-இல் திருமணம் இரு பாலாருக்கிடையே தான் என்று கூறினர். 2012-இல் ஓரின சேர்க்கையாளர்களும் திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ளலாம் என்று கூருவது அரசியலில் தனக்கு அனுகூலமாக இருக்கும் என்பதை உணர்ந்து கொண்ட ஒபாமா தன் நிலைப் பாட்டை மாற்றிக் கொண்டார். போப் பிரான்சிஸ் திருச்சபையின் நிலையை முற்றிலுமாக மாற்றிக் கொள்ளவில்லையெனினும் தன் எதிர்ப்பின் தீவிரத்தை மாற்றிக் கொண்டதோடல்லாமல் ஓரின சேர்க்கையாளர்களும் அரவணைக்கப் பட வேண்டியவர்களே என்று மாற்றத்திற்கு வித்திட்டார். 

போப் பிரான்சிஸ் பிலடெல்பியாவில் பேசும் போது மனிதர்களுக்கு அளிக்கப் பட்ட சுதந்திரத்தில் முக்கியமானது மத நம்பிக்கைகளைப் பேணும் சுதந்திரம் என்றார். சிறு பான்மையினரின் மத வழிபாடு முறைகளைப் பாதுகாக்கும் பொருட்டுப் பில் கிளிண்டன் அதிபராக இருந்த போது ‘மதச் சுதந்திரம் ஷரத்து’ கையெழுத்திடப்பட்டது. இப்போது அதுவே அமெரிக்க அரசியலின் முக்கியப் பிரச்னையாக உருவெடுத்துள்ளது. ஓரின சேர்க்கையாளர்கள் திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ளலாமென்று உச்ச நீதி மன்றம் தீர்ப்பளித்த பிறகு அமெரிக்காவின் சில மாகாணங்களில் சலசலப்புத் தொடங்கியது. தன் தனிப்பட்ட மத நம்பிக்கையினால் ஒரின சேர்க்கையை ஒப்புக் கொள்ளாத அரசாங்க ஊழியர்களும் வணிக ஸ்தாபன உரிமையாளர்களும் தங்கள் சேவையைக் கோருவோர் ஓரின சேர்க்கையாளர்கள் என்று தெரிந்தால் அவர்களுக்குச் சேவையை மறுப்பது அவர்களின் மதச் சுதந்திரம் என்ற வாதங்கள் எழும்பின. கான்ஸஸ் மாநிலத்தில் திருமண உரிமம் வழ்ங்கும் கிம் டேவிஸ் என்பவர் நீதி மன்ற தீர்ப்பை நிராகரித்து ஒரின சேர்க்கையாளர்களுக்குத் திருமண உரிமங்கள் வழங்க மறித்து நீதி மன்ற அவமதிப்புக்காகக் கைது செய்யப் பட்டார். குடியரசுக் கட்சியின் சில வேட்பாளர்கள் அவருக்கு ஆதரவாக நின்றனர். 

இந்த மதச் சுதந்திரத்தின் பெயரால் வேற்றுமைப் படுத்துவது, என் பார்வையில், மிக ஆபத்தான இரு முனைக் கத்தி. இன்று கிம் டேவிஸுக்காகத் திரளும் குடியரசுக் கட்சியனர் பலர் அமெரிக்க இஸ்லாமியர்கள் இங்கே ஷரியா சட்டத்தைப் புகுத்தி விடுவார்களென்று ஒரு விஷம விஷப் பிரசாரத்தையும் முன் வைக்கின்றனர். சில விமான நிலையங்களில் டாக்ஸி ஓட்டும் சோமாலிய இஸ்லாமியர் வாடிக்கையாளர்கள் மது வகைகளை வைத்திருப்பது தெரிந்தால் அவர்களுக்கு வண்டி ஓட்டுவது தங்கள் மத உணர்வுகளுக்கு ஊறு விளைவிப்பது என்று வாதிட்டனர். கட்டாயமாகக் கிம் டேவிஸுக்காகத் திரளும் எவரும் அந்த டாக்ஸிகாரர்களும் அதே வாதத்தைப் பயன்படுத்துகின்றனர் என்பதை ஒப்புக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள். ஆக அவர்களுக்கு முக்கியம் மதச் சுதந்திரம் என்ற பெயரில் கிறித்தவ அடிப்படைவாதத்திற்கு ஒரு கட்டற்ற உரிமமே. 

அமெரிக்கத் தேர்தல் களைத்தை மேலோட்டமாகக் கவணிப்பவர்களுக்கே இங்கே கருக்கலைப்பு பற்றி நடக்கும் விவாதம் திகைப்பூட்டக் கூடிய அளவு இரு சாராரையும், ஆதரவாளர்கள் மற்றும் எதிர்ப்பாளர்களையும், மிகவும் பிளவு படுத்த கூடிய ஒரு பிரச்சினை. கத்தோலிக்கர்கள் அதிகமுள்ள அயர்லாந்தில் கருக் கலைப்பு என்பது அறவே செய்ய முடியாத ஒன்று, தாயின் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்தான போது கூட. ஓர் இந்தியப் பெண் கருக் கலைப்பு செய்யவியலாததாலேயே சமீபத்தில் மாண்டது அங்குப் பெரும் சர்ச்சையைக் கிளப்பியது. கரு என்பதும் ஓருயிரே என்பது திருச்சபையின் நிலைப்பாடு. குடியரசுக் கட்சியனரில் பெரும்பாலோர் அத்தகைய நிலைப்பாடுடயவர்களே. போப் பிரான்சிஸ் அமெரிக்கா வருவதற்குச் சில வாரங்களுக்கு முன்பு அமெரிக்காவெங்கும் கிளைகள் கொண்ட ஒரு பெண்கள் நல மையம், அங்கே கருக் கலைப்பும் செய்யப் படுவதுண்டு, கலைக்கப் பட்டக் கருக்களின் பாகங்களை விற்பதாக அங்கே பணிபுரிபவர்களே வாக்கு மூலம் கொடுத்தது போன்ற ஒரு ரெகார்டிங் வெளியாகி ஒரு சூறாவலியைக் கிளப்பியது. 

மதச் சுதந்திரமென்பதை தங்கள் அடிப்படை வாதங்களுக்கு ஒரு போர்வையாகக் குடியரசுக் கட்சியின் ஒரு பகுதியினை எள்ளி நகையாடும் ஜனநாயகக் கட்சியனர் அவர்கல் பங்குக்கு ஓட்டு அரசியலுக்கு அதே சுதந்திரத்தை முன் வைத்தே கத்தோலிக்க நிறுவனங்களுக்கு ஒபாமாவின் மருத்துவக் காப்பீட்டுச் சீரமப்பின் சில விதிகளில் இருந்து விலக்களிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளதை ஏற்பதோடல்லாமல் அதற்கான சட்ட வரையறகளையும் செய்து கொடுத்தனர். 

ஒபாமாவின் மருத்துவக் காப்பீட்டுச் சீரமப்பின் விதிகளின் படி நிறுவனங்கள் தங்களிடம் வேலைப் பார்ப்பவர்களுக்குக் குடும்பக் கட்டுப்பாடு சாதனங்கள், கருத்தடை சிகிச்சை மற்றும் கருக் கலைப்பு செய்தால் கூட, அதற்கான செலவை, தாங்கள் அளிக்கும் காப்பீட்டு உரிமத்தின் மூலம் வழங்க வேண்டுமென்று உள்ளது. அவை எல்லாமே கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் சட்டங்களுக்குப் புறம்பானவை என்று கத்தோலிக்க நிறுவனங்களுக்கு விலக்கு அளிக்கப் பட்டது. என் பார்வையில் இது மிகத் தவறு. வேலை நிறுவனத்தின் ஸ்தாபகர்களின் மத நம்பிக்கைகள் அவர்களின் தனிப்பட்ட உரிமை, அவற்றைத் தொழிலாளி மீது சுமத்துவது தொழிலாளியின் உரிமைகளை மீறுவதாகும். ஒரு காலத்தில் இன வேற்றுமைக்கு விவிலியத்தை ஆதாரம் காட்டியவர்களுண்டு ஆனால் இன்று அதைச் சட்டம் மட்டுமல்ல சமூகமும் ஏற்காது. 

போப் பிரான்சிஸ் பயணத்தின் மிக முக்கியமான ஏமாற்றம் அமெரிக்கக் கத்தோலிக்கப் பாதிரிமார் பலர் சிறுவர்களை வண்புணர்வு செய்த மிகத் துயரமான நிகழ்வைப் பற்றி வெளிப்படையாகப் பேசாதது. பாதிரியார்களின் பிரம்மசர்யம் பற்றிய உரையாடல் மிக அவசரமாகவும் தீர்க்கமாகவும் மேற்கொள்ளப் பட வேண்டியது. ஓரின சேர்க்கை இயற்கைக்குப் புறம்பானதா என்று விவாதிப்பதைவிடப் பிரம்மச்சர்யம் இயற்கைக்குப் புறம்பானதா என்று வெளிப்படையாகப் பேசலாம். மகாத்மா காந்தியே சறுக்கியது பிரம்மசர்யத்தைக் காக்கும் வேள்வியில் தான். 

புவி வெப்பமாதல், பொருளாதார ஏற்றத் தாழ்வு போன்ற விஷயங்களில் பெரும் கவனம் செலுத்தும் போப் பிரான்சிஸ் தன்னுடைய திருச்சபையின் சில நம்பிக்கைகளையும் மறு பரிசீலனை செய்ய வேண்டியது காலத்தின் கட்டாயமே. 

அமெரிக்கப் பயணத்தில் இரு சந்திப்புகள் மனதை வருடியவை. பிலடெல்பியா அருகேயுள்ள ஒரு சிறைச்சாலைக்குப் போப் பிரான்சிஸ் சென்று கைதிகளைச் சந்தித்து உரையாற்றினார். போப் உட்காருவதற்கான நாற்காலி அந்தக் கைதிகளால் செய்யப் பட்டது. தான் அடியார்க்கு அடியார் என்று தன் சீடர்களுக்கு உணர்த்தும் விதமாகக் கிறிஸ்து அவர்களின் கால்களைக் கழுவியதை நினைவுக் கூர்ந்த போப் “நானே, வழியும், சத்தியமும் ஆவேன் என்றுரைத்தவர், உலகில் மனம் மாற்ற முடியாதவர்களுண்டு என்ற பொய்யிலிருந்து நம்மை மீட்டவர்” எனக் கூறி முடித்தார். 

பிலடெல்பியா வந்திறங்கிய போப் விமானத்திலிருந்து தன் வண்டியில் ஏறிப் புறப்பட்ட போது அங்கே வளர்ச்சிக் குன்றிய ஒரு சிறுவனைப் பார்த்து விட்டு வண்டியை நிறுத்தி அவனிடம் சென்று ஒரு பிரார்த்தனை செய்து பின் ஆசிர்வதித்தது அடுத்த நாள் சமூக வலைதளங்களில் காட்டுத் தீயெனப் பரவியது. இது போன்ற ஆனால் சற்று வேறு பட்ட நிகழ்வொன்றும் நடந்தது. போப் ஜான் பால் 1979-இல் வந்த போது ஒரு பெண் குழந்தையைத் தூக்கி வைத்து கொஞ்சினார். இன்று வளர்ந்து விட்ட அக்குழந்தை போப் பிரான்சிஸை சந்தித்தார். இரண்டு போப்களைச் சந்தித்ததை உவப்போடு பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார் அவர்.

How did Donald Trump, a bloviating billionaire, become a viable candidate for the US presidency in a country that boasts of the American Philosophical Society and The Metaphysical Club? The candidacy of Donald Trump was born on the day Bill Clinton decided to court the youth vote by appearing on MTV and answering whether he preferred boxers or briefs. Democrats are chortling that Trump resembles the GOP and preening intellectuals are tittering that Trump will lead GOP to an electoral rout not seen since the days of FDR. Trump is not the product of GOP and nor is he a problem for the GOP. Trump is a creation of America's intellectual decline and resembles America, not just one or the other party. All that remains is for a 21st century Richard Hofstadter to reprise a retelling of 'Anti-Intellectualism in America'.

Benjamin Franklin established the American Philosophical Society in 1743 and the Metaphysical Club was first established by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1872. Both were supposed to foster vigorous intellectual debate and provide the nascent country with intellectual inputs. Thomas Jefferson was instrumental in establishing the Library of Congress and felt that legislators should've access to a library to read and enlighten themselves before legislating. Donald Trump is incapable of any intellectual thought or vision and yet he is a serious candidate for a national party. How did this happen?

The coarsening of debate and an all pervading shallowness in conversation are both the contributions of a social media fueled 24 hour news cycle. There was a time when Milton Friedman, no less, ran a series of shows dedicated to very serious discussion on economics with guests like Thomas Sowell. Friedman's show 'Free to choose' was legendary in dethroning liberal economics with feisty, lively and deeply intellectual debate on how 'progressive policies' where anything but progressive. And then there was William F. Buckley Jr's 'Firing Line' with wit, verve and intellectualism. Buckley's on-air vitriolic feud with Gore Vidal had all the fireworks that one would expect when ideological apostles of clashing world views joust intellectually. It is a sad decline that in today's America what makes for controversy is a woman moderator being berated vulgarly by an air-headed billionaire.

Newt Gingrich acidly told financial journalist Mario Bartiromo, during a debate where she moderated, in 2011 that nobody in the news media asked "one single intelligent question to the 'Occupy Wall Street' crowd". The 'Occupy' movement was a rag tag motley crowd with a collective IQ on economics that was almost zero. Yet, the media lionized them without any serious intellectual scrutiny of their addled ideas or idiotic policy prescriptions. Is the connection between media leaving 'Occupy' crowd unchallenged and the rise of Trump as a candidate, a tenuous or far fetched one? No. Not at all. When one kind of vacuous demagoguery is accepted in the name of challenging 'the establishment' it is impossible to prevent another demagogue doing the same.

When highly respected and very professional anchor John King, CNN, opens a presidential debate with a question on the private life of a candidate and get's singed on live-TV by the sharp tongued candidate we can understand why the media is the favorite punching bag for the extremes in both left and right. Newt Gingrich went on to win the South Carolina primary solely because of that on-air explosion. This is the same media that gave Barack Obama an unprecedented latitude because of his historic candidacy. At one debate Hillary Clinton mocked the media for its softball questions to Barack Obama. She asked "why don't you give him a pillow".

A sickening feature of the rise of the Trump candidacy is the role of the media. On the one hand anchors breathlessly comment on how the man adds nothing to the debate, how he is a problem for a party that's trying to reach out to minorities and then goes to the same man for interviews because, as he rightly brags, he's a 'ratings machine'. Trump has been invited by CNN's Wolf Blitzer to comment on serious issues so many times in the past as if he had anything to contribute. The media created Trump and is now acting like the GOP created him. Only Huffington Post had the guts to say it'll stop covering Trump as a candidate for the presidency but will feature him in the entertainment section.

The rise of Huffington Post as a news portal is the best summary of America's intellectual decline. The Huffington Post is nothing but a web aggregator and does no original journalism, lives off the journalistic efforts of other news organizations, and makes more money than them. How does one intelligently talk of the roots of the 2008 financial crisis in a country where Huffington Post exists?

The media circus during the 2008 heated primaries featuring Obama and Clinton showed the shallowness of the debate. Supporters and partisans from each camp were invited on primary nights and other times to pow-wow on-air by networks. Pray, since when did mud fights by partisan hacks become worthy of being labeled political debate? Yet, no anchor challenged Barack Obama on serious issues like campaign finance. As a long shot candidate Obama had signed a pledge that if elected as nominee he'd take public financing for the general election. Then, nominee Obama, rolling in cash, refused to do just that despite being reminded of the pledge by a far underfunded opponent. Nobody in the media sought to pin him on the hypocrisy. And Obama gleefully dished out policies that everyone loved to hear but nobody thought he'd seriously implement. Obama talked tough on appointing lobbyists until he appointed one. He pontificated loftily on how he'd bring about health care reform with discussions on live TV until he discovered the virtues of backroom deals. He railed and ranted against NAFTA and then slyly sent his economic adviser to the Canadian embassy to assuage fears that he might tear up NAFTA. Now, the same guy is trying to sign the largest trade deal.  Is it any wonder then that the people have little or no faith in the media? Faced with double speaking politicians it is no wonder that a guy who speaks his mind, however offensively, catches the imagination of the people and is rewarded for being gutsy.

If Mitt Romney had had half the guts of Donald Trump he'd be sitting in the Oval office today. Romney was repeatedly cornered in debates by his opponents and moderators for how his firm 'Bain Capital' conducted business. He was repeatedly asked to explain job losses at firms his company bought over and he was tarnished as 'vulture capitalist'. What many conceded in private and what was true was that the nature of his business was exactly that. Private Equity firms are called in as a last resort by a hemorrhaging firm to restructure and become viable. This naturally involves layoffs. Asked about lenders losing money when his companies declared bankruptcy Trump cheerfully told the moderator "look, these lenders are not small time investors". He essentially said "they know what game they are playing". That was ballsy. The audience  loved it. Romney, a far more honorable business man than Trump, never embraced a muscular argument in favor of capitalism and thus yielded the ground to Obama, a demagogue, who understood nothing of economics. On this one score I wish Romney had been like Trump.

It is sickening to a see a parade of self-righteousness by the Democratic party against Trump's misogyny. Apparently its not ok to be offensive about women and minorities only when its the GOP doing it. Washington DC mayor, African-American, railed against how Asian shops are dirty and there was no furore of disapproval. A South Carolina union had a pinata beating contest where the piñata was the GOP governor Nikki Haley's face. Nikki Haley, a woman of Indian origin, is the governor of SC. Liberal comedian Bill Maher happily heaped patently offensive comments about vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin without attracting even a finger wagging let alone a tsunami of condemnation. Then there was Barack Obama telling Hillary Clinton, without looking at her, "you are likable enough Hillary" and then called a lady reporter "sweetie". And then there is Bill Clinton, he of the "I did not have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky" fame.

When the Democratic party candidates pontificate on Trump's demagoguery its rich with hypocrisy. The basic rule of politics is anything goes. Throwing the kitchen sink at the opponent is par for the course. When GOP congressman Paul Ryan presented proposals to overhaul entitlement programs the Democrats released an ad showing him pushing an old woman off a mountain cliff.

Yes, Trump's comments about Mexican immigrants being rapists, is not just false but patently offends any decent person. But, again, Trump's demagoguery strikes a chord in a sympathetic audience, but, at its root is the Democratic demagoguery that nobody becomes rich except by defrauding somebody else. Democrats made it fashionable to tell a majority of America that a minority is responsible for all their troubles and lack of progress in life. To the democrats the culprits were the so called rich people. To the Trump voter it is the illegal immigrant. Across the world, in every country, immigration always raises concern about destabilizing local labor market. This is economic reality. There are sound economic arguments in favor of immigration but sound economic arguments are not only shunned by the Democrats but actively discredited so when they are indignant at Trump feeding into a frenzy they are being facetious and hypocritical. Also the cynicism of the GOP voter on immigration is not entirely without basis. Democrats always gleefully point out that it was Reagan who actually allowed an Amnesty program for illegal immigrants. True. Reagan signed on to an amnesty program when the number of illegal immigrants were 3 million. The other part of the bargain was to secure the border and that never happened and the result is today there are 14 million illegal immigrants. Also, let's face it, the Democratic party loves this problem only because they see a vote bank in that demographics.

For those offended by the vulgar remarks of Donald Trump here's another unpleasant fact of why such rhetoric could appeal to a voter. The illegal immigrant lobby has become a political force that is brazen in its demands and the brazenness is not just in 'demanding' citizenship but has reached such ludicrous levels where it is considered politically incorrect to even call them "illegal immigrant". The political correctness brigade informs us that we should refer to them as "undocumented immigrant". Is it any wonder that when Trump rails against political correctness there are people willing to applaud him. And by the way Bernie Sanders, a proud socialist and another Democratic candidate, practically echoes Trump's desire to seal the borders and put a stop to immigration. So much for the GOP being the party opposed to immigration. Actually GOP loves immigration, albeit, the legal kind, the kind that is not a hostage to the Democratic party.

There was a time when Leonard Bernstein conducted classes on classical music for children in New York City and that was broadcast. Then there was Jacob Bronowski lecturing the world on the intellectual "Ascent of man". Today we are left with following Kim Kardashian's nude posterior breaking the internet. And then we blame Trump for having audacity to consider himself a candidate for the highest office in the land.

Donald Trump is a product of the intellectual swamp that is America today. Trump is a reflection of the decline of intellectualism in all walks of life in America. Trump is not GOP's problem he is America's problem. Trump does not embody GOP, he embodies America and for that every American should be ashamed.

Arizona's Intolerance, GOP's Bigotry and Liberals' Hypocrisies

I am often asked why is it that I don't write about issues and problems relating to USA. I usually don't feel like writing about them because US is very good at a vibrant discussion. Also, say on Ukraine, can I add to what Anne Applebaum writes? Today, having witnessed a good deal of debate on a shameful bill in Arizona I do feel that I need to write because I think some issues have been swept under the carpet or glossed over.

Arizona state legislature has passed bill SB1062, called in short as 'Freedom of religion' bill. The bill awaits Governor Jan Brewer's, Republican, signature. The bill was spearheaded by state GOP. Republican presidential nominees John McCain, senior senator from Arizona and Mitt Romney have called on the governor to veto the bill. Megacorp Apple has issued a warning that the governor should veto the bill. NFL has threatened to cancel next year's Super Bowl in Arizona costing the state many millions.

The bill gives the freedom to business owners to refuse service to customers if they thought such service, depending on who the customer is, would violate the owners' religious beliefs. If a gay or lesbian couple entered a store the store owner could refuse service to them on grounds of his/her religious belief. This, the bill's sponsors say, protects the religious freedom of business owners. And, forcing the owners to serve everyone would violate the personal religious freedom of a business owner.

A lot of ire, deservedly, is directed at GOP and Republicans in general for this bigotry. This is a shameful bill. Afro-American TV anchor Van Jones said on CNN that not too long ago considered blacks to be inferior based on their own interpretation of the Bible. Jones asked, a supporter of the bill, if such discrimination too should be protected as freedom of religion. The guest nonchalantly pointed to the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to US constitution to say that it cannot be done because discriminating on the basis of race was illegal but there is no such amendment to protect against sexual discrimination.

Liberals are chortling over GOP's moment of harakiri. That's sheer hypocrisy. As part of Obamacare all employers were mandated to provide free birth control to women employees. Catholics who run a lot of hospitals and schools rose up in uproar saying that they, as Catholic employers, cannot go against their religious tenets and pay for employees birth control. Catholic hospitals also don't perform abortion. In Catholic Ireland abortions were such a strict no-no that an Indian Hindu woman was allowed to die by the hospital during childbirth rather than perform abortion. In an election year Obama buckled and declared, pompously, that Catholic employers need not provide birth control options to their employees. The erstwhile constitutional law professor finagled a loophole. Obama said the insurance companies, not the employers, will provide birth control options at no cost to the employees or the employers. This is utter nonsense. And of course insurance companies passed on the cost into the premiums. I'd have supported Obama if he had stood his ground and said "your religious beliefs are yours to keep but you cannot impose it on an employee who works for you". Surprisingly this has never been brought out by anybody.

I am a capitalist and even a libertarian to a great extent but I cannot support legislation like this saying "oh well employers and business owners who discriminate will lose customers and that, automatically, will weed them out in the market place". Thats idyllic laissez faire libertarianism. Many times employees and customers will not have a choice. Ayn Rand and Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights legislation on the grounds that the government should not interfere and that free market will weed out racist businesses. That will work in theory not in practice.

Few years back Somali Muslim cab drivers in Minneapolis refused to take passengers from airport if the passengers were found carrying alcohol. Not many Christians were too happy with that. Cabbies refusing a passenger have had their licenses suspend and fines imposed. The cabbies went to court against the fines but lost the case. Interestingly its only Somali Muslim cabbies who acted thus. An Iranian Muslim told Washington Post that he would service anyone. Somalia is home to very radicalized Islam. I am sure Arizonans who cheer religious freedom would be quick to condemn the Somali Muslim cabbies because they are Muslims. The Christian right loves to talk of religious freedom when it is theirs.

America's founding fathers revolutionized the world with the doctrine of separation of church and state. However, America remains a very religious country that still tears itself apart on the question of abortion and sex. Oftentimes public policy is driven by religious feelings. Its a shame that American Presidents preside over 'National prayer day'. I don't have anything against Presidents being believers but that belongs in his personal life. As constitutional head a President has no business presiding over any prayer. I am ok with something like George Bush holding a multi-faith prayer service after 9/11. Thats a President using a cultural binding force during a time of great national calamity and its not institutionalized unlike the Prayer day.

This bill again puts the GOP in a harsh light. If the GOP has any dreams of winning the White House any time soon they need to put bigotries behind them. Many republicans are decent egalitarians but this fringe element, the vocal minority, is bringing disrepute. Unless the lunatic fringe is curbed the GOP will send itself into oblivion.

The only real champion in this ugly mess is Capitalism. The threat of withdrawing big business from Arizona is what is really giving the governor a pause to think. Businesses are in the fore front today to foster diversity, racially, ethnically and sexually. Companies realize that diversity, of all types, is key to a vibrant and therefore successful organization. A less talked about angle is the role of capitalism in bringing down walls of bigotry. Slavery and racism were never about capitalism or labor rather it was about a people's bigotry. Slave holding agrarian south was defeated by relatively more capitalist industrialized prosperous North. Apple which is on the verge of opening a new Sapphire glass factory creating 2000 jobs. Apple CEO is gay and he has warned Arizona that passing the bill will make it difficult for Apple, an inclusive company, to operate in Arizona. I'd love to hear liberals cheer the power of a big corporation.

National Book Award winning author Andrew Solomon wrote critically acclaimed book "Far from the tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity". The book deals with how parents come to terms with mentally disabled children and accept them for what they are. Solomon said his experiences as being a gay son, the different one, gave him perspectives that he would not have had if he had been heterosexual.

Obama's Second Coming: Learn Humility and Leadership

Just a month back who would have thought that come election day Obama would be in a dead heat with Mitt Romney? The race is statistically tied. Opinion polls are all over the map. Barring an Obama win by a whisker any other outcome, including an Obama landslide, would grab the headlines and rewrite US political history. 

It is political campaign principle to try and define one's opponent before he/she has had a chance to define himself/herself to the public at large. Bill Clinton used it to great effect in 1996 to define Bob Dole before Dole could define himself for the electorate. Bush repeated it in 2004 defining Kerry as 'flip-flopper'. Romney had to take a very rough beating all through spring and summer when Obama pummeled him on airwaves as a corporate raider, a leech on the poor, called his economic philosophy 'Romneyhood: Reverse Robinhood" and more. All that worked as expected until the first debate.

I belong to a distinctive minority who do not think that Obama is a great orator and not an articulate person when it comes to explaining policy. On October 6th at the first presidential debate the world came crashing on Obama worshippers, especially those who think that words were invented to be spoken by Obama's tongue. Just 30 minutes into a 90 minute debate the twitter verse exploded with anger and disappointment at the pathetic listless performance of Obama. Overnight Romney became a viable President. Obama had spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to convince people that Romney was a rapacious get-rich-by-looting guy who was completely heartless. All that came undone. Obama never recovered his commanding lead after that.

70 million Americans tuned in to discover that Romney is not a fire breathing monster with two horns. Probably Obama's caricature of Romney went too far that seeing a semblance of normality in Romney an electorate hungry for change got converted by the thousands. Even if Romney loses this election the debate and how it changed a race will go down in history books along side the fabled Kennedy-Nixon debate. 

Romney will lose Ohio and thereby the presidency due to the notorious oped he wrote for New York Times titled, so ominously, 'Let Detroit go bankrupt'. Incidentally oped writers do not choose the title, the title was given by New York Times. If an oped sunk a Presidential candidacy it would be that. 

Economist magazine endorsed Obama outlining their deep misgiving about the protean shape shifting character of Romney. The editorial praised Romney's tenure as governor and wondered if he is capable of being that common sense pragmatic person or would he be controlled by the right wing in GOP. In what is the most counter argument for an endorsement Economist said they preferred Obama as he is a 'known devil'. Literally. In 2004 the same Economist overlooked Kerry's far left flip flops as part of campaign to gin up the base and endorsed him.

In its very back handed endorsement Economist voiced deep concerns about Obama. In the 104 rounds of golf that Obama played just one was with a Republican. Obama's aloofness is legendary and the fat that he does not foster any long lasting relationship with anyone beyond the close knit coterie from his Chicago days is the stuff of parlor gossip in DC. 

Obama is famously aloof even with congressional leaders from his own party. As senator he was highly impatient with the arcane procedures of the senate and did not form any real friendship.  He visited his alma mater Columbia University to deliver a commencement address and surprised many by not spending a minute more than necessary in a college that shaped him. He did not visit any old haunts, the dorm or the neighborhood as any college student would have done going back to deliver a commencement address. He had no lasting friendships from even his college days. Bill Clinton on the other hand formed last relationships at Yale and Oxford. Clinton fell in love at Yale, his classmate Robert Reich was later Secretary of labor, Strobe Talbot from Oxford was later Ambassador to Russia. In an interview Obama confessed that he would rather spend time with his children than hobnobbing with Congressmen. 

Even Obama's left wing fellow travelers have noted with frustration his aloofness. Gail Collins, columnist for New York Times and therefore an Obama supporter, noted that the "President goes to a country, gives a speech and gets out". Given the adulation he receives for his oratory Obama does hold his ability to sway audiences by speaking in very high esteem. Unfortunately for him speeches rarely sway anybody let alone a country or an opposition party. Clinton and Blair formed a great friendship. Obama has not developed any real relationship with any foreign leader. 

The famously non-partisan Bob Woodward chided the President for not showing 'leadership' during the debt deal negotiations. Woodward detailed how Obama could not even convince his own party leadership. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, both democrats, showed scant respect toward the President. 

According to current projections it appears that the lower house will remain in the hands of the GOP and the senate will have a threadbare democratic majority. That makes working 'with' congress an imperative. A second term Obama needs to address that. For that he needs to learn from Clinton, his new found best supporter and advocate.

Obama has a tendency to be arrogant and dismissive towards the GOP that he often tells them "elections have consequences and I won". Yes he won a massive landslide victory in 2008 but he won only 53% vote. 47% voters rejected him. Amidst the excitement over the historic election most lost sight of the fact that he won lesser states than Bill Clinton. Obama came to his inauguration like a Caesar riding a crest of euphoria. When Roman generals take a victory lap, according to legend, a slave would often ride along side whispering in their ears "remember you are a mortal". Unfortunately Obama's coterie keep whispering in his ears that he is 'messiah'. 

Obama's win tomorrow by all means will be a very narrow one and he needs to remember that nearly half the country rejected him. Injecting that humility into his perspective will restrain him from running amok with ideology. Else voters will deliver another rebuke like they did in 2010. In a deeply divided nation the winner would do well to remember that the victory was only eked out. 

Above all one expects the US President to be serious about his job. It is all very well to play partisan politics to win an election but to govern in a partisan way will be disaster. US has serious problems that need serious answers. Pandering to unions with rhetoric about taxing 'millionaires and billionaires' is childish. If puerile talk becomes policy it would not serve the country. Obama's tax fetish will yield revenue that can only fund 72 hours of US federal spending. Between reforming entitlement spending and killing Osama Bin Laden the latter needs lesser political courage and leadership. For the sake of the nation let us hope that he gets serious and honest.

If Obama's second term is to be unlike George W's second term then he needs to learn to be humble, learn to be more inclusive of ideas from opponents, learn to lead. I am, however pessimistic of Obama's ability to learn. I worry like Yeats and wonder what kind of candidate will 'slouch' towards DC.

GOP And Romney Will Defeat Romney.

In the aftermath of 2008 presidential election the Republican party lay in complete disarray and in tatters. George Bush bears a lot of responsibility for destroying the GOP brand. McCain drove the last nail into the coffin of GOP's image as the party of ideas with his selection of Sarah Palin. For nearly 4 years thereafter until the day she announced that she will not be a presidential candidate Sarah Palin remained as a poster-girl for populism run amuck and her shadow on the GOP completely destroyed any semblance of intellectual rigor in the party of ideas. Seeing Obama demolish the Clinton dynasty, 'without raising his voice', many republicans resigned themselves to writing off 2012 and only talked of 2016. There was no hope for a GOP nominee in 2012 seen from 2008. But things changed.

In the heat of healthcare reform debate the tea-party insurrection breathed new vigor into the GOP. The bail out of Detroit and Wall Street added flavor to the debate on the role of government in the economy and lives of citizenry. The tea-party led GOP delivered a crushing blow to Obama in the mid-term elections. Under Obama the Democrats lost more seats in the Congress than the previous rout in 1993 under Bill Clinton. The tea-party also cleaned house in the GOP. Some of it was not pretty and sowed the seeds for Obama's own resurrection for 2012.

Sarah Palin and the tea party are largely responsible for the caricature of air-heads that the GOP became. With the fight for controlling the senate in balance the tea party defeated GOP's establishment favorite and veteran Mike Castle in an upset primary in Delaware that launched Christine O'Donnell into limelight. O'Donnell had confessed to having indulged in witchcraft in her youth, wondered if church-state separation was in the constitution, released an ad that declared 'I am not a witch, I am you". She was trounced and GOP was left with a stigma.

When Michelle Obama campaigned against obesity, an epidemic that costs the US economy billions of dollars, Sarah Palin asked school kids to eat cookies and resist 'government intervention in their lives'. Libertarianism was tarnished by the fathomless depths of Palin's vacuity . When Palin spoke of Obama's death panels in the health care reform bill Krauthammer wrote "let's have a serious discussion and lets begin by asking Sarah Palin to get out of the room". Explaining how GOP would stop Obama's agenda Palin crowed "we are not the party of no. We are the party of 'Hell!! NO!" The tea-party congressmen wore it as a badge of honor that they were elected to be uncompromising. When US faced the debt ceiling many tea-partiers went on TV to announce pompously "a US default will not be catastrophic". Congresswoman and presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann proclaimed that it will be a good idea to 'default'. Blogger and talking head Erik Erikson counseled GOP on CNN to 'hold the line'. Bob Woodward in his latest book chides both the President and GOP speaker John Boehner for not leading in debt ceiling talks. Obama came in for a rare direct rebuke from Mr Woodward. But the idea of uncompromising, devil may care attitude of GOP is stuck in the minds of the voters.

The GOP candidates for presidency were an exercise of how low can the party really go.

A former Federal reserve member Mr Herman Cain made a caricature of himself with his 9-9-9 plan that he parroted even for a question like if the sun was too hot. Cain was swept out in a barrage of rumors of sexual affairs

Michelle Bachmann was in a league of herself.She used to crow 'I want to make Barack Obama a one-term-president' in all debates. She bowed out after the Iowa primary after tarnishing GOP as the anti-science party by expounding her loony theory that vaccines cause autism.

Then there was the 'oops' heard around the world from one-time favorite Texas governor Rick Perry who forgot what departments that he wanted to abolish and said 'oops'. Rick Perry flamed out after it became known he had 'mandated' HPV for girls in school and more importantly he had allowed illegal aliens who came to USA as kids to study in Texas universities paying the much lower in-state tuition fee if they had gone to school there. Latino's had loved that but in a republican primary that humane gesture became apostasy.

Rick Santorum, with degrees in Law, declared Obama to be a 'snob' for wanting kids to get a degree and for good measured reminded voters of the cave man with his harping on social values. Rick Santorum stepped down after it looked like he would lose in his home state PA to Romney.

Newt Gingrich won South Carolina only because he skewered John King of CNN who asked Gingrich at a debate before the primary about the charges Gingrich's wife made on ABC that he wanted an 'open marriage'. When Newt Gingrich appeared to demolish Romney, after a victory at South Carolina, the GOP establishment watched in horror. Former GOP nominee Bob Dole wrote a stinging op-ed on why Gingrich as nominee will be disaster.Then there was the pseudo revolutionary Ron Paul who attracted a Obama like following amongst the youth with his outlandish ideas of ending the Federal reserve and having an isolationist foreign policy. Ron Paul's use of libertarianism was often a fig leaf for either muddled outdated ideas or plain racism. Each month saw the rise and later, fall of a that month's not-Romney candidate.

Finally Romney became the nominee by default.

Mitt Romney is not an instinctive politician, much less a conservative in his bones. Romney remains Romney's first nemesis. When Rick Perry needled him about illegal aliens working in his home once upon a time, Romney blurted "we had sub contracted the work. When we found out that illegals were employed we told the contractor 'for Pete's sake I am running for office I cannot have illegals working on my property". At another debate Romney challenged Perry to a $10,000 bet. When asked whether he, like his father, would release ten years of tax returns Romney gave the most awkward guffaw to say "maybe". Romney threw the kitchen sink at Gingrich to win Florida and having won he told America the next morning "I am not concerned about the poor they have a safety net, the rich are doing just fine its the middle class I am worried about". The impish anchor pressed him if he did not care about the poor and Romney said "if the net has holes I will fix it". Conservative commentators went into a fit of rage. That no-one but the very weakest should rely on any safety net but be productive individuals is the conservative orthodoxy.

Romney is a very successful businessman but his success rate as politician is pathetic. Reacting to Romney's claims about not spending his life in the government Gingrich snarled "that not just baloney but pious baloney". Romney had chosen not to run for re-election as governor but instead run for president in 2008 because his ratings were falling in MA. Previously Romney had lost a senate race. His 2008 bid ended very quickly.

Life is unfair. Obama learned that fundraising conference calls, supposed to be private and with supposedly friendly people, need not be so. An attendee recorded Obama saying that people sometimes vote against their economic interests because they 'cling to their guns and religion'. When the tape surfaced Obama had by then become the darling of the media and had an unassailable lead in the delegate count in the primaries. Romney, like an GOP candidate, is not the darling of any media save Fox news. A surreptitiously recorded video of Romney at a fund raiser is dominating the news now.

Analyzing how he can win the election Romney told a group of very rich fund raisers that 47% of Americans who pay no tax (actually they pay payroll tax but just not Federal income tax) are 'dependent' on the government and feel 'victimized' and 'entitled' and that his message of 'tax cuts' will not resonate with them and therefore he would not pay attention to courting them. The complete put down of a large swathe of America left everyone speechless and many seething with rage. Peggy Noonan, speech writer to Reagan, wrote a stinging op-ed in Wall Street Journal. Romney, to be fair, was sizing up the problem of how he can win the election. The CEO was looking to see how he can reach 51% vote. He was looking at a problem and was presenting possible solutions. That an American Presidential candidate is looking to win just 1% above the 50% mark is itself pathetic and it is beyond speechless to see him write of 47% of the electorate. Ironically amongst that 47% are a large percentage of seniors who live on Social security and mostly vote GOP!!!! The guy does not even  know who his voters are.

A man running for the Presidency is politically dimwitted to have offshore accounts in Sweden. Its not illegal but it clearly shows that he is running for the presidency as an after thought and is not running with his heart and soul in it. Responding to a heckler at a rally Romney yelled back "if you want free stuff go vote for the other guy". In a GOP primary that sounded good but it showed a deeply flawed candidate.

Romney is a very, very rich man. Despite both Obama's and his GOP opponents's propagandaAmericans, by and large, do not begrudge him that. It is Romney's utter failure to convince Americans that he will be President of all Americans that will defeat him.

When Romney harps on his credentials as problem solver and as CEO it often comes across as "I'll fix the problem and if it requires patchwork solution I'll take it". It also translates into "I've no core belief that I'll go to mattresses for". When Obama repeatedly scolded the Clinton era for the acrimonious debates Bill Clinton responded "we fought the fights that had to be fought". No CEO does that. And thats why CEO's do not become politicians. The Presidency is much larger than anything anybody could cite as experience. Romney's total silence on how he governed as governor of MA and perpetual harping on his ability as CEO can only carry him so far. Romney actually governed more from the center than this right wing version of Romney that he is presenting himself to be. Romney became the laughing stock of conservatives when he said that he was 'severely conservative' as governor. 'Severely conservative. What's that?" chortled conservative talking heads.

The GOP convention also highlighted another problem. The GOP does not have a Bill Clinton they only keep talking of Ronald Reagan who left office 24 years back. There is no elder statesman in GOP who can rally the base and make the case for the incumbent to the undecided.

When the camera panned across the audience in Tampa the GOP crowd was almost exclusively caucasian though they paraded a popular woman Hispanic governor, a wildly popular Hispanic senators, two Indian-American governors, an Afro-American congressman etc the crowd did not reflect that diversity. The GOP has a demography problem that was accentuated by Romney's strident rhetoric against Hispanics who form the largest group of illegal aliens in USA. Susannah Martinez, Hispanic republican governor of New Mexico mocked Romney's 'self deportation' idea 'self-deportation? what's that?" Jeb Bush warned against such rhetoric and cautioned that the nominee cannot win unless they can match George Bush's the Latino vote share. Romney pretended he never heard it. The only way Romney could get the nomination in 2012 was by rooting for some extreme right wing positions in order to convince primary voters of his 'conservatism'.

While Obama was giving away free contraceptives for women (paid by the much hated insurance companies) Rush Limbaugh smeared a university girl student, Sandra Fluke, with an obscene epithet. Whatever her policies might be she did not deserve that. Romney, afraid to antagonize Rush Limbaugh, soft pedaled his condemnation saying "I would not choose those words". To be fair Obama is equally silent when his supporter Bill Maher heaps despicable caricatures of Sarah Palin but then the media, his lap dogs, give Obama a pass. The democrats unleashed a propaganda about GOP's 'war on women'. Adding fuel to that was GOP senate candidate Todd Akin's comment that in a 'legitimate rape' the woman's body has 'ways to shut that whole thing off'. The GOP became apoplectic and asked Akin to withdraw. Akin is still staying in the race. Making matters worse is Paul Ryan's sponsoring of an anti-abortion bill with Akin that refused the three most common exceptions to abortion, 'rape, incest and life of mother'. Virginia state legislature considered passing a bill, encouraged by its GOP governor, to compel women to undergo a physical probe examination to see and hear a heartbeat prior to going in for abortion. All of this snow balled making the GOP look like a party of old caucasian misogynists.

In a week when US embassies were attacked, in what is now called a 'planned attack', and an ambassador was killed in an embassy that was not protected very well despite being in war ravaged Bengazhi we find that Obama is doing no explaining but it is Romney who is being pilloried for his rush to blame Obama. When Romney scolded the Obama administration the attacks were still underway and it would be a few hours before ambassador Richard Stevens would be killed. Romney could have exercised restraint and appeared 'presidential' by not seeking to upstage the commander in chief. But he acted like a schoolboy. That said, again the national media ignores the more important issues to focus on Romney. Then came the 47% talk and now nobody talks of Obama's foreign policy that is in tatters. Killing Osama bin laden is not foreign policy.

I've donated to Mitt Romney and I'll vote for him. But I do not see him winning and actually I am beginning to wonder if he can be a better president. So why should I not vote for Obama? Just yesterday an old taping of Obama was unearthed where Obama declared unambiguously ''I believe in redistribution". I'd any day take Mitt Romney over Karl Marx. By the way Andrea Mitchell of NBC said that the reason NBC is not airing that clip of Obama is because they have not authenticated it. I bet if it was a Romney video NBC would have it on a day long loop.

Romney is not Bill Clinton to get elected despite a string of women claiming, and proving, that he is an adulterer.There is still slim hope for Romney though. The upcoming debates are his last chance. Today the topics for the first debate were announced, they are, healthcare, role of government and governing. If Romney does not ace it then its all over. And the reasons for his defeat will be the GOP and himself. The gods are smiling on Obama now.

Ryan and Rand Vs Obama and Wright

Ever since Mitt Romney chose Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate op-ed writers, bloggers and talking heads are all abuzz with talk of Ayn Rand. Paul Ryan had said in the past that Ayn Rand was his greatest inspiration to come to public life. Ryan gives Rand's tome 'Atlas Shrugged' as Christmas gifts to staffers and others.

Paul Krugman the unofficial town hall crier of the democratic party declared in his column "Galt, Gold and God", "what does it say about the party when its intellectual leader evidently gets his ideas largely from deeply unrealistic fantasy novel?". Another blogger seized on the fact that Ayn Rand, according to Jennifer Burns's biography 'The Goddess of the market: Ayn Rand and the American right", expressed admiration for a grisly serial killer and wrote a column titled, yes, titled "Paul Ryan's guru Ayn Rand worshipped a serial killer who kidnapped and dismembered little girls". Jennifer Burns herself took  to op-eds to ask if Ayn Rand, who disapproved Ronald Reagan, would approve Paul Ryan. Burns wrote two op-eds.

Paul Ryan told an interviewer that for all his love for Ayn Rand her militant atheism is not something he agrees. Ryan's another mentor is Friedrich Hayek. Hayek, Nobel laureate in economics, is revered for his polemical book that argued about the evils of socialist/communist model of economics in 'The Road to Serfdom'. Hayek nevertheless had voiced support for a government run health care program. An idea that Ryan and Romney now oppose. Another columnist pulled up Ryan for 'cherry picking' ideas from Rand and Hayek.

Liberals and the Press would have drooled 'intellectual' if Obama talked about philosophers and economists so passionately. They drool so even when he does not talk serious ideas and offers his 'Robinhood' as a choice against what he calls 'Romneyhood'.

Ayn Rand did indeed express some admiration for a serial killer from the perspective of a man who defies society's mores. As repugnant as it may seem let us not forget that Truman Capote's 'In cold blood' is considered a classic despite the fact that Capote did indeed almost admire two very gruesome murderers. Jennifer Burns does trace how Rand obsessed with Nietzchean idea of 'super human' did fashion her heroes mostly as anti-heroes first and only then progressed to stylizing her heroes as defying society in a positive way.

No human being ever picks up a book and accepts all that is said, even for the Bible. If Ryan as a Catholic said he believed the Book of Genesis these same liberals would chortle. We all read and love many books. We imbibe cherry picked ideas to create the most complex phenomenon in the world, our own composite identities. Ayn Rand hated Friedrich Hayek exactly for Hayek's concession that government could still have some legitimate role. If Krugman thinks 'Atlas Shrugged' is just fantasy he needs to take some classes in literary appreciation. Maybe his employer, Princeton University, will give him a discount to attend its humanities courses.

Jennifer Burns's biography details the strife between Ayn Rand and the intellectual vanguard of the right, particularly its rising intellectual lodestar William F. Buckley Jr. The conservatives ridiculed Rand for her atheism and for idolizing strident unbridled individualism. Liberals scorn conservatives use of religion as a yoke for their ideas. It is a topic for another blog. We all read great works of literature without agreeing with all of the ideas or the personal ideologies of the author. Tolstoy was a philanderer. Does it mean that we condone or look to emulate that part of Tolstoy when we lose our hearts in his immortal works?

Compare all this brouhaha to how quickly the media and opinion makers were eager to pass over discussion of Obama being influenced by Jeremiah Wright.

After a month of unbroken string of crushing victories as the 2008 primaries ground towards three big states PA, OH and TX. ABC broke news about Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright's incendiary sermons. The week after 9/11, Wright, in elaborate embroidered dress, thundered "America's chickens have come home to roost". In another sermon he intoned at high pitch "no, no, no. Not God bless America but God damn America and that's in the Bible".

America was stunned. Obama campaign went into a tail spin. Hillary archly said "if he had been my pastor I'd have changed my church". The news was not broken by Fox News and hence even Obama loving liberal media had to sit back and take notice. Questions of 'does Obama share these views' dominated the airwaves. Obama the orator rode to the rescue of his own candidacy. Obama's belief that he could mesmerize audiences and make them suspend logic proved, by hind sight, a great prophetic gamble that paid off handsomely.

Obama confessed that Rev. Wright used to speak critically of USA in his sermons while Obama sat in the pews for two decades. Rev. Wright presided presided Obama's marriage and baptized his children. Obama nevertheless added that these remarks, now looped on national TV, were 'incendiary'. The remarks, Obama said in his landmark address, had "the potential not only to widen the racial divide, but view that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation; that rightly offend white and black alike". He then went on to say that this was not all there was to Rev. Wright and why he can no more abandon his pastor than he could abandon his white grandmother who raised him but was prone to racial stereotyping. Obama gave a carte-blanche good conduct certificate to Rev.Wright, "not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms".

More of Rev. Wright's sermons tumbled out. Rev. Wright himself chose to address the country at a 'National Press Club' event. The press conference was sheer circus. Obama advisers showed him a taped video and told him to make the final decision of what to do. In a brief terse address Obama repudiated the pastor and severed all connections with Rev. Wright's church. In the general election when GOP surrogates raised the Wright issue John McCain, a gentleman, forbade any discussion of that saying that such a topic is beyond politics. Big mistake.

Obama's assertion that he has never heard such 'incendiary' remarks from Rev.Wright is a facetious claim that was eagerly lapped up by his enablers in the media and propagated for consumption to his adoring masses. The night before his announcement in Springfield, IL, for his candidacy Obama campaign was worried. Rolling Stones magazine had run a profile on Rev.Wright the pastor supposed to offer invocation at the historic ceremony. Obama personally called Rev. Wright and said 'you have a way of saying things' and suggested that Rev.Wright offer a prayer away from the public eye in the basement before the chosen 'One' ascends the stage.

Rev. Wright was known for such remarks and known to make anti-semitic remarks in sermons. Long after the election when asked if he had spoken to Obama Rev.Wright said "them Jews will not allow me to talk to him". Obama's then chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel was a Jew. Afro-American community and their leaders have a fraught relationship with Jews and Israel. Malcolm X, according to his Pulitzer awarded biographer Manning Marable, would recount the words of Saudi emperor referring to New York as 'Jew York'.

Sarah Palin's 'palling around with terrorists' helped the Obama campaign to ridicule any legitimate criticism. Lost in the mind numbing adulation of Obama was any discussion of intellectual influences on the candidate.

Obama's recent biographer David Maraniss says he referred to his first employer as 'working for the enemy'. That was Obama's vision of corporate America decades before he called Wall Street CEO's 'fat cats'. This view was strengthened and deepened in the crucible of Rev.Wright's church. From W.E.B. Du Bois to MLK Jr to Rev Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson, criticism of capitalism is an article on faith amongst Afro-American leaders especially in church sermons.

 Everyone talked about MLK Jr's comment that 'Sunday morning is the most segregated time in America' referring to how whites and blacks have separate churches. No journalist or magazine thought it fit to write articles about black churches and their ideologies. Jodi Kantor, NYT journalist, wants to visit Mitt Romney's Mormon church and talk to fellow Mormon church goers. Recently Mitt Romney invited journalists to his church and a CNN columnist wrote asking for more such invitations.

Obama spoke in his address about being referred to as 'not black enough'. That's true. But what he failed to mention was that that whisper campaign was what the black political leadership used to destroy his run for becoming congressman in Chicago. Pulitzer winning author David Remnick recounts Obama's testy relationship with black leaders in Chicago in 'The Bridge: The life and rise of Barack Obama'. Obama needed a foothold in Chicago politics amongst Afro-Americans and the door for that was Jeremiah Wright's influential church.

Oprah Winfrey was another congregant at Wright's church. When her show started being noticed Winfrey, knowing Wright's incendiary attitude, withdrew herself from the church. It is little wonder that Obama followed her example.

Recently Rev.Wright claimed that he was offered a bribe during 2008 election to disappear and not cause a problem for Obama. Of course the press acted like they never heard the interview.
